I just installed the new TTPro 5.0.7, apparently without issue.

Note: "To perform this version update, launch an installed copy of the TechTool Pro 5 application and select the Check For Update... option located under the TechTool Pro 5 menu. To update an existing eDrive, boot to the eDrive and perform the Check For Update."

Over the next few days, I hope to test 5.0.7 on my system, but for now, I just hope the issue with Directory Backup eating the HD space has been resolved. Should someone have already tested this issue, please post your findings.

I have had no problems in initial tests, all seems normal. But I have had no issues that required fixing/repair, so how well TTP works, I dunno.

Also, I cancelled the Surface Scan as that was going to take several hours (gasp).

Apparently the 5.0.6 issue of one's HD being eaten during Directory Backup has been resolved, MMT3 “…if you update to TechTool Pro...onger arise.”

Should I have time in the next week, maybe I'll give that a go.

Thanks for posting, Harv. I haven't enabled the directory backup yet so I don't know if it is actually fixed. In any event, I already have a SuperDuper backup, a Time Machine backup, and a backup of my personal files (each on a separate hard drive) so I don't feel that TTP's directory backup is all that essential.

Please update your results as they come in.

As much as it might appear to be over-reaction on your part to have so many varied back-ups, I totally agree with your process as you have it.

I just encountered my own personal example of the Seagate hard drive sudden death syndrome.....I powered up an external drive with multiple archives of different home directories from various relatives and the drive took a long time to finally mount, then proceeded to progressively eat itself with bad sectors ultimately yielding absolutely no chance to recover ANY of the data thereon....and I didn't have any backup to the backup.

This was a drive that I had purchased less than three years ago and had only used for short periods to backup home directories as I worked on different family computers....probably less than 100 hours of total time in service.

An inconvenient and fortunately inexpensive lesson.....my adjusted backup plan will now look a whole lot more like yours.

If you had had TTP's directory backup operating, you still would have lost data. No matter how good the software, data can't be recovered if the drive's magnetic material flakes off. Maybe you could collect the flakes and ask James Bond to recover your stuff?
