#7030 - 12/27/09 06:13 PM MacBook - Continuously Running Fans

My daughter's MacBook fans started running continuously about a week and a half ago. In twenty minutes she will lose 30% of her battery power. This is a big problem as she attends three hour lectures.

Her machine is 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and she's running OS 10.5.8

We've reset PRAM, reset the SMC, done Permissions and Disk Repair with Disk Utility. We also rebuilt with Disk Warrior. So far, nada.

Her Maglink may provide a clue to this problem as I note that gets quite hot - but only on her machine. I am currently charging my other daughter's MacBook with the same MagLink and it's remaining cool.

I have now done a SafeBoot but the result is the same - fans come on high and run continuously

Oh... you wanted some suggestions? shocked

wink   How about determining which process is hogging the CPU?
The built-in tool for that would be Activity Monitor. [sort by CPU]

Is this what Activity Monitor shows when the fans are spinning at full speed? I don't see anything running here that your daughter might be using to take notes. You left out the most critical piece of information as well which is the percentage of the CPU being used by each app.

Don't worry about the formatting, it aint easy to do, if you can do it at all. In this case the main things we need to see is the task name and percentage of CPU it is using. The total percentage of CPU utilization for the User, System, and Total would also be informative.

Hmm-okay... but i don't see where you show CPU usage there.

Try this Terminal command, and post a few samples (i.e., when the fans are ramped up):

ps -axcr -o pid,%cpu=-%CPU,time,command |sed '1,11!d'

Well, the machine may be anywhere... but let's see where the process is. Just eliminate the -c option to get a full pathname:

ps -axr -o pid,%cpu=-%CPU,time,command |sed '1,3!d'

[i also went from listing the top 10 to just the top 2]

Thanks Hal:

Just to make sure I understand (getting dozy in my old age), I should enter the command line you've provided into Terminal.

Does that mean this command will straighten out whatever problem the Canon code is causing?

Yes.

No. . . but it will pinpoint the location of the problem program, and from that we can probably deduce the rest.

Not sure. After letting the machine cool down, we did a restart and opened quite a few apps and have fan noise although not as loud as before. We're about to head out on a planned event and will be back in a couple of hours.

Meanwhile, just in case that additional information is helpful, I'm attaching it. The only change is a substitution "daughter" for her full name.

Talk to you shortly

Interesting... i duplicated a very similar output here (by printing), and the path to the app doesn't show up.
Anyway, the culprit is probably at this location...

/Users/"daughter"/Library/Printers/Canon_MP530_FAX___1.app

It seems to be trying to print some document called "Windows Live Hotmail 1".

I think the thing to do is to pause the print queue and delete that job (and perhaps any others that may
be hanging around?). Go to System Preferences --> Print & Fax and select the "Canon_MP530..." goober
(which hopefully is in the list of printers). Click on the button there called "Open Print Queue..." and the
interface to the Canon_MP530 application should become visible. Use either the toolbar or the menus to
pause printing, [select and] hold jobs and -- ultimately -- delete whatever jobs you deem necessary.

If no "Canon_MP530..." goobers appear in the System Preferences --> Print & Fax area, then go to that folder
and (hopefully the app is there so you can) move it to the trash... i guess.  Let's hope plan "A" works anyway.
Otherwise, further cleaning may involve going into the /private/var/spool/cups/ folder armed with sudo.

Hi Hal:

Just got back.

We appear to have lift-off. The document "Windows Live Hotmail 1" was in the print queue and my daughter deleted it. Immediately the fan sound diminished.

My daughter asked me to pass along her thanks. It is a great relief.

FYI: I've asked her to plug in her Maglink so that we can get to the bottom of the overheating (It heats up while charging her MacBook but not while charging my other daughter's.) I'm hoping it's related to the same problem and is now fixed. A twofer would be nice.

UPDATE: Several hours have passed; the Maglink is charging without the excessive heat; the fans are quiet; and the battery is lasting much longer. Great.

Thanks again.

ryck

And thanks to you for making it possible for me to help someone else.
It feels good doing something useful occasionally, to provide a break
in my "alpha-geek internet-tough-guy posturing" routine. [or such was
the wordage in a recent scolding i received.]

Interesting topic, especially the Canon MP530 with MacBook part of it. As it happens, my daughter’s MacBook (2008 model, Mac OS 10.5.8) every once in a while displays similar sustained high fan noises. (I haven’t checked the power adapter temperature under those circumstances, but will if it happens again.) Her default printer at home is an MP530. No other Mac in the household (iMacs, MB, MBP) displays similar fan issues with the MP530. When I looked into it with Activity Monitor the few times I noticed the MacBook going through this attempt-to-take-off routine, it turned out that a clearly Canon-driver related file (the exact name of which eludes me now) was hogging the CPU. In only one case a file was stuck in the Print queue.

At the same time, I noted CCAAgent (Cisco Clean Access) sucking the remaining CPU cycles. Killing both processes solved the fan issue; I cannot say if killing the Canon process alone would have done this because I didn’t try that. I recently noted that CCAAgent is regularly using 80-150% of her CPU cycles regardless of printing; this is not accompanied with excessive fan speeds or noise. CCAAgent is required by many colleges to access their networks, and (I suppose) can be disabled when away from school. Beyond taxing the CPU, I wonder if this software could be involved more directly in my daughter’s printing related fan issues at home. However, that may be a topic for a different thread elsewhere. Still, the coincidence is intriguing.

Indeed, but the topic of the thread you link to centers on an apparent incompatibility of a CCAAgent version with Snowy. Still, I've seen a few other references to noisy fans and CCAAgent, hence my suspicion of complicity there. Fortunately, CCAAgent can be quit at home; it remains to be seen if the fan issue reappears under those circumstances.
