With tiger, I would click on the dock icon for the Epson 2400 printer and there would be a button/tab for utility, which would bring up a window to clean the printer or print a nozzle check. Don't see that anymore. Don't see it with any printers anymore. How do you access this now? thanks.

There are two things that you can do. At least, they work with my Epson 1280.

1. Launch Epson 2400.app or click its dock icon to bring up the Epson 2400 window. At the top of that window, click Supply Levels. That gives you a drop-down window with several options. For me, the Supply Levels tab does nothing but if I click the Utility Tab and opt to Open Printer Utility (and the Application menu will now say Epson Printer Utility Lite), I see all the options. Opening Epson Printer Utility Lite shows me the remaining ink levels whereas the Utility Tab does not. However, it does allow doing a nozzle check and cleaning the heads.

2. Another thing that works for me is to launch the Epson Printer Utility directly. It's located in /Library/Printers/Epson/InkjetPrinter/Utilities. I actually have 2 printer utilities in that folder and only one works. If you have the same, you'll have to experiment.

The above works for me but your specific printer is different. Try it and see what happens.

Jon,
where do you see utility?
see screenshot. I can't find it:

I found that utility, but I double click it and a message comes up and says, "the printer is not registered". I click ok and it goes away! so how do you 'register" it? thanks.

That window has Utility as a fourth tab in my situation. Evidently, your printer has different things than mine. I can't answer your question about "register" because that didn't happen to me.

Probably, the best thing is to download the latest driver from Epson. You can get information here. If that doesn't solve the problem, contact Epson for tech support.

EDIT: One more thing. I had a problem installing the Epson driver after I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Repairing permissions solved it. I don't know if that's the issue for you but it won't hurt to try.

Jon, thanks, I just downloaded driver from website, but everything looks same even the driver number (Guten 5.2.3) whatever that means.
I also have a Brother and Canon, which work fine, but are also missing utilities.

I don't know enough to offer a solution but, since all of your printers have the same condition, I wonder what might be common. Is there any logic in looking at them all via the common route of System Preferences, then Print and Fax?

Ryck, I've explored that system pref. but have not come up with anything.

That may be the problem. You seem to be using a Gutenprint driver, not an Epson driver. I had the same thing when I upgraded to 10.6. See this thread for details. FYI, Gutenprint provides drivers for many printers that may be unsupported in 10.6 but, obviously, your Epson is.

See if any of the things in that thread are of use to you. Here's what I would do:

1. Repair permissions and run Repair Disk with Disk Utility (see these instructions). Better yet, use Disk Warrior (if you have it) instead of using Disk Utility's Repair Disk.
2. Reset the printing system. Note: You will lose any presets that you may have created so you'll have to redo them.
3. Reinstall the drivers that you downloaded from Epson and reselect the printer in the Print & Fax preference pane.

That may solve it. Good luck and Happy New Year. smile
