OS 10.5.8
Yesterday I had to erase and restore (I goofed somewhere) and for some reason I'm not aware of, my system prefs would not open.
I need to boot up from my back up but obviously I can't.
Any ideas?
jaybass.
As I type this, my cursor is invisible also.

Was that done using Time Machine... or how?

Which method are you using to open them (i can think of three), and what all *does* happen when you try it that way?

Does the same mode of failure occur if you open the /Applications folder and directly double-click on System Preferences.app?

Here are some caches & plists to trash:
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

Have you tried starting up while pressing and holding Option? That should give you a choice of startup disks, hopefully including the backup.

I don't use time machine, I prefer superduper.

The system preference icon wasn't there in apps...that was my problem.

Thanks for the advice on trashing those items you mention.
