OS 13.5.2

Today I inserted a memory card from my Nikon D750 and a window appeared on my desktop for very first time asking me to "Please grant access to enable all features" given a choice of 'Grant access'- 'Grant Access to All' or 'Skip'

This also happened when I inserted another card from my other Nikon. I don't know what or why this is suddenly appearing. Answers anyone?

This sounds like a standard security notice with MacOS 13.x.
Is this the first time you have inserted a memory card since you started using Ventura?

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 13.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

Ira, I have been using Ventura for several weeks and I view my images at least once a week. I think I will email Nikon and get it straight from the horses mouth.

I will post their reply if it warrants it.

I had an unrelated issue whereby my administrator password was not recognized. A restart solved it. Have you tried that?

True, but sometimes a restart solves odd problems.

Ira, I have not heard back from Nikon apart from they saying it is not camera related. On checking the internet I get "The Grant Access error is caused by the updated Apple sandboxing rules."

I have no idea what that means. Can anyone expand on that reply?

Apple does silent security updates, done while you and your computer are sleeping. smirk

I stand by my earlier comment that what you are seeing is a result of one of those updates. Even though you have not had this experience before with Ventura, a recent silent update may have resulted in a new level of security.

Sandboxing has been around for years most notably in iOS and iPadOS. It simply means that an app and all the files and resources used by that app are strictly encapsulated within the app itself and the app cannot access any files outside of the "sandbox" nor can any other app access any data or files inside the sandbox. If you delete the app, you also delete its data. Together with military grade one-way encryption it is at the heart of Apple's vaunted data security suite. This Wikipedia article contains a more fulsome description of the concept.

Complete sandboxing of macOS apps is impractical, but in Ventura and even more so in Sonoma, Apple extends the walls of the sandbox beyond the application itself, and requires the user to grant access to ouside resources¹ on an application by application and resource by resource basis. Apple's Advanced Data Protection further extends the boundaries of the sandbox to the iCLoud and across devices on the same Apple ID. The "price" of this additional protection is the necessity of individually granting access to resources on an app by app basis.

BEFORE YOU ASK: You cannot disable or turn sandboxing off.

Thank you for clarifying Sandboxing, which I am not conversant with so I won't dwell on it. I'm just wondering if that window is going to be a permanent appearance in the future. If so, no big deal I suppose.

It will reappear periodically when a new device, new app, or app update, occurs and attempts to access system files, devices, or services that have not been previously approved. I can't verify this at the moment, but IIRC app store apps are sandboxed and do not require user access verification.
