OS 10.14.6 I'm thinking of installing Ventura on an external HD just to see if I can manage it. I wiped the disk and it is OS extended etc and qualifies to install.
I was thinking of making it the start-up disk and then trying to install it from there as a bootable drive. Is that possible?

I think joemike will confirm that you can't boot Ventura from an external drive without its first having been installed on your internal, because there's a disk image that needs to be on the internal to make the external bootable.

artie,
I think you are right. I was hoping it would be a short cut.

jaybass

I have just gone the terminal route but after typing in the correct wording, the word password appears with an inverted key next to it. I tried to type in my password but no letters would show.

See here: Last login: Fri May 19 11:28:29 on console
abcs-MacBook-Pro:~ abc$ sudo /Applications/Install\ 13\beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --vo;ume / volumes/ventura --nointeraction
Password:
Sorry, try again.
Password:
Sorry, try again.
Password:
sudo: 3 incorrect password attempts
-bash: ume: command not found
abcs-MacBook-Pro:~ abc$
abcs-MacBook-Pro:~ abc$

I was allowed to type in my password after abcs-MacBook-Pro:~ abc$ appeared...I have just deleted my password. Why couldn't I type in my password?

It's expected when you enter a "sudo" command for the key to appear as you saw, but you never see any indication that you've entered your password.

I'm not sure about what happened after your 3rd "incorrect" password attempt. It looks like you entered "ume" and Terminal didn't recognize it.

artie,

After I tried to enter my password, I did not enter 'ume'. After the last time the word password appeared, all the wording was computer generated.

A small point but I do not have a MacBook-Pro.

Thanks for your response.

Taking a closer look at that, it looks like oyu downloaded the beta version of Ventura, not the public release, and it also looks like you've got a typo in "vo;ume."

I don't think correcting that stuff woill change your results, though.

This is a duplicate response, but I'll update my response to the original.

I don't know enough UNIX to fully understand what happened, but it looks like the ";" in your "vo;ume" typo created a break in the command which then picked up with the "ume," which Terminal reported isn't a recognized command.

That, by the way, is actually a kind of scary reason to either copy & paste Terminal commands or be EXTREMELY careful typing them. Nothing happened in this instance, but I wouldn't want to find out what would have happened if "ume" were a recognized command.

artie, I never realized that I had made a typo error...probably the reason why I couldn't type in my password...just a guess.

I'll try again tomorrow.

I have just read the instructions again and I see that it says to enter your mac's password and hit the return key. NOTE that when you type the password in terminal, it won't show anything on the screen!!!

It goes on to say, Sit back and relax.

There's still the matter of your apparently having d/l'ed the BETA, which you shouldn't be able to install, rather than the official release.

At this point, I suggest waiting for joemike to digest what's happened so far and offer up his opinion.

I will first stipulate that I may not understand all of this, but this is what I need this afternoon. I am using a MacMini, 2018, with Monterey. Have an application that need to find out if it will operate with Ventura before I upgraded.

I went to the Apple Store, downloaded Ventura and when it got to the where to install I chose my external LaCie HD and proceeded. The instructions said there could be 2 or more restarts. It installed and told me to re-start to complete the installation. It booted into Ventura on my LaCie External HD on the restart. I moved my questioned app over, tried it out, it worked. I went to the StartUP preference and changed my startup back to my internal HD and restarted, it booted normally into Monterey. I have not tried to boot into my LaCie again.

A bit off topic, I still have the 12 GB Install OS Ventura app in my Applications Folder. Can I upgrade my internal HD, currently with Monterey, using the downloaded Installer or do I need upgrade via the Software Update in System Preferences? Thanks.

I don't remember ever having upgraded that way myself, but I can't imagine it yielding different results than Software Update would.

More: I have rerun the d/l'ed installer over an existing installation on numerous occasions without ever having experienced any issues.

It just occurred to me that the required disk image may have been installed on your Mac when you installed Monterrey.

Way out of my league now. Are you saying when Ventura was installed on the LaCie HD it also put a Ventura disk Image on my internal HD that has Monterrey and that allowed it to boot into the LaCie?

artie,

I have downloaded ventura onto my HD and after checking it out, I think I will keep it. Question: There are 499 gb on my external HD and 486 gb on my HD. Is that ok to use my external as a back-up?

The appropriate size of a backup disk is dependent upon the amount of data you want to store on it.

Even if you intend to use the external for Time Machine, the standard 3x the size of the internal may be hugely excessive if you haven't got much data on your internal.

2 TB should be sufficient for both a regular and Time Machine backup.

I'm happy with Ventura, but for a nasty habit of my front app losing focus, forcing me to click on my desktop and then back on the app before I can hide or quit it. (And then again, it might really be a holdover from Monterey. tongue )

Nothing critical that you need to know, though, but the new System Settings pane which has replaced System Preferences will likely confuse you at some point.

The most recent result that a quick Google search turned up is: "It indicates the selected disk cannot be used as a startup disk to boot up your Mac, and the reasons behind this error could be: Startup settings prevent booting from external disks. The drive format is incompatible with the installer."

It may be related to a setting you need to change while in Recovery mode.

To the point, though, why can't you retrieve your data by accessing your Mojave installation via Finder...without booting into Mojave?

The last time I was in Mojave, I saved some home movies from iTunes and put them on the desktop. Of course they didn't show in ventura so I thought I had to boot into Mojave. What I didn't remember was that I had also

put them into docs which allowed me to retrieve them as per your suggestion...thanks. When I upgraded to ventura, I couldn't find them because 'home movies' doesn't show as such in tunes sidebar. However they are in there

now.
