Unfortunately my Epson Perfect V500 Photo stopped working when I changed over to 64 bit software. I was advised to use Image Capture although I still don't know if it'd be any good on critical images like colour prints. However, even if it could handle critical stuff, Image Capture has a fatal flaw. It creates humungous files.

Examples:

A colour receipt, that was a 258 KB PDF with my Epson software, is 1.3 MB @ 360 dpi, or 3.6 MB @ 600 dpi with Image Capture.

A two page letter, that would have been about 1200KB with Epson software, is 16.9 MB with Image Capture.

Thoughts?

Is the Epson software upgradeable? I get update notices from Epson from time to time.

Good thought, but no. That was one thing that disappointed me with Epson. Very early on, when I was going through the process of finding replacements for my 32 bit apps, I contacted Epson and asked about my printer software. They said there was no problem and not to worry - Epson would continue to have working software.

When I changed to a 64 bit OS, and downloaded new drivers and software, I found things had changed and my scanner wouldn't work. I contacted Epson and their story had also changed. Essentially they said: 'You have a 32 bit scanner that won't work with your 64 bit software. Too bad, try Image Capture.' Epson's recommendation is clearly wrong as Image Capture generates unmanageably huge files.

Take a look at VueScan. The developer supports thousands of different scanners, including many "old" ones. There are also settings to control the nature of the output that could affect file size. VueScan has been around for a long time and many people, myself included, never bother with the scanning software that comes with most printers.

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

I recall, on a different matter some time ago, VueScan was also a recommendation from joemike. I've downloaded a trial copy and have been goofing with it a bit. I did a scan of a full page B/W invoice at 200 dpi resolution and the result is quite good....and only 81KB. I have two scanning requirements:

1. Scanning colour and B&W documents into PDFs for use as email attachments

2. Transferring colour and B&W prints into digital for archiving family photos

The second is, of course, more critical so it'll be interesting to see some of those results.
