I assume "charger" means "power adapter," in which case your first step might be to try to find another Mac that uses the same one and see if yours works with it. (Don't guess about a machine's specs; be certain before you plug it in!!!)
If you can't find such a Mac try a "Genius" or other Apple tech who, I'll guess, has ways to test an adapter to see if it's outputting the correct power.
Good luck.

/Applications/Utilities/System Profiler will give you a clue.

Artie is right, of course, but here's a shortcut to opening System Profiler:
1. Click the Apple menu (upper left of the screen). 2. From the drop-down menu, click About This Mac. 3. In the About This Mac window, click More Info. That opens System Profiler. SP will give you every bit of information that you ever (or never) wanted to know about your Mac.

Actually, Jon, (in Finder) command-shift-U>System Profiler is the real shortcut.

That's it! (This may be your excuse to upgrade your obsolete Mac. ) According to Mactracker these are your power adapter's specs: "Power Adapter: 45 W Apple Power Adapter (M8576**/A)" Hope this helps.

Financial issues. The PowerBook G4 that was made in 2006's AC adapter worked, but I don't have it. I was at someone's house.

A quick eBay search turns up replacement power adapters that go for $10 - $20, but I'll advise you to be really careful to get an exact replacement...ask the vendor specific questions to satisfy yourself and check hir feedback as well.
Good luck.

may as well buy the 65w adapter. that's all we carry. we also carry the larger magsafe adapter too, (85w) no sense in carrying the smaller ones, the bigger ones work the same and cost the same. (and no, they won't 'overpower' it, current is supplied on demand)

If you mean as opposed to a "MagSafe" you're correct. (MagSafe adapters didn't happen until 2006.)

I haven't got either a clue or the inclination to be the person to experiment. (I don't see any computers pictured here.)

If finances are an issue, why not just go for a cheap 3rd world replacement adapter?
I can't speak for them, but the battery I bought was as advertised (except the color was slightly off), although its longevity is yet to be determined.
