For those who need to reinstall an older OS, read How to download an old macOS installer

Thanks for this. I'm going to download both Yosemite and El Capitan, which I had downloaded (in another thread) from an Apple site but could not get to install over Snow Leopard (10.6.8). Worth a try.

Haven't you gotten past that with a clean install of a later version?

At any rate, Jon's linked doc says:

Quote
How to find old macOS installers
Choose from the following to get the official macOS update and directly from Apple. Clicking through will start the download.

macOS 10.10 Yosemite
macOS 10.11 El Capitan
macOS 10.12 Sierra
(Emphasis added)
Sounds like maybe the same d/l's you've already had trouble with.

Good luck!

No, and I haven't tried yet as it's a huge time-consuming pain to possibly have a solution. Each re-install involves all the albums the grand kids like, MS Word (which is done on the phone with an interminable input of about 8 or 10 sixteen digit numbers), et cetera. All of that to get a solution to "The audio function keys don't work". For now, the audio volume is being done with the Command key and the up/down arrows.

Will, I get around to it? Yes....but that'll be when I have at least an entire day to spend on it.

I think you're right, these didn't work either. I just thought it was worth a try in case I lucked out and my issue was related to something in the downloads.

I know I sound like a stuck record, but have you tried creating an external boot drive installer yet? It doesn’t have to be a thumb drive, but that is the most convenient media and because you are booted from a very stripped down version of macOS it neatly avoids most version errors. How to create a bootable installer for macOS.
