I tunes/ iphone mess - bringing playlist in

With iphone plugged into the computer it used to be easy. I would drag a playlist on top of the iphone, and it would import in exact order.

Now it immediately sorts by song.

Also, While plugged into the computer I don't see any playlist listed, just long list of sorted songs.

Also when I try to delete those songs they don't seem to go away.

It's a real mess; anyone know how to bring playlist into music app on iphone and have some control whats going on?

What version of iOS do you have on your iPhone?
What version of MacOS do you have on your Mac?
It makes a difference...

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

👌Just what I needed to know...

  1. Do NOT open Music on either your iPhone or Mac
  2. Forget drag and drop.
  3. Connect your iPhone to the Mac
  4. On the Mac Open Finder and select your iPhone in the Finder Sidebar
  5. You may have to authorize the connection on both the Mac and the Phone, just follow the instructions that appear
  6. In the Finder window that appears click on Music
  7. On the list of playlists that will appear check any playlists you want on the phone and uncheck any you do not want
  8. Near the bottom of the window click on the Sync button
  9. wait until the progress bar completely fills in
  10. In the Finder sidebar click on the ⏏︎ icon to the right of your iPhone listing to dismount it
  11. Disconnect the USB cable

By-the-way the Finder window under General will tell you what version of iOS is installed on you iPhone and can install any updates. The location of the iOS version number is also on the iPhone in the same place it has been since the earliest days of iOS under Settings > General > About and is the second item on the list.

Thanks Joe. 14.4.2
This is great, really brings up the phone -- much better method, than I have always been doing _ on the desktop bringing up the iphone in music app via desktop apps.

That said: I see big list of songs, but all greyed out.

And even under Movies tab (and I only watch a movie every year or two), there is a 2GB movie, of which I don't remember, but it's greyed out also. and would love to delete it but can't

Now for sync, confused, why are we syncing, and what are we syncing to?

But for how, why things greyed out?

(ok see when click sync, it ask sure you want to delete and sync with this library? But I don't want to ask my desktop library has 6 GB of music and it's only a 2gB iphone. (that said on next iphone upgrade, I make sure it will fit full library)

Synch matches the contents on your IPhone with what is on you Mac or at least those tunes, playlists, or whatnot that you have checked. Items that are checked will be copied to your iPhone and those that are unchecked will be removed if they are already there, If you really only have 2GB storage on your iPhone, (my Apple Watch has 26.5GB) there probably isn’t room for those playlists, but I am not positive about that. First backup your iPhone to the Mac using the Finder then try deleting some tunes/playlists on you iPhone and see if you can synch a new playlist.

FWIW I just discovered this method while setting up a new M1 iPad. So much better than using iTunes/Music.

Joe, thanks, I think iphone is 8GB, and can hold 2k songs. So my little playlist sof 2k songs fits well for now and last 10 years.
Next phone all over then get full 30 gb or whatever I have...

But for now: How do you sync one specific playlist via finder, do not see that? (everything greyed out)

Yeah finder way better .. in Music, does not show anything. The finder could be better too, but beats out Music app.
