Although I do a clean, fresh installation of the Mac OS, that article is somewhat scary. And I've noticed that with Big Sur, the total space taken up by the OS and my apps, settings, files, folders, etc. is about 35 to 40% higher with Big Sur that it is with Catalina. For both of my Macs, I always reserve the entire internal SSD (256 gig on my Mini, and 252 gig on my MacBook Air) for the OS and those other files I mentioned. I also make a concerted effort to keep both of my machines "lean, mean, and clean", and thus have never had the issue referred to in that link.

I did, though, very recently have an issue with space and Big Sur, but it was while attempting to create the eDrive used in Tech Tool Pro. Using the version of Disk Utility that came with Catalina to Erase and Format a drive that already had Big Sur on it (was having some application-related issues), when I attempted to create the EDrive (only 33 gig in size), got an error message of not enough space available (issue has to do with the creation and management of containers by the OS). But when I used the version of Disk Utility that comes with Big Sur to do the Erase and Format, that issue went away.

For some "within the same OS" upgrades, I will just download the Combo Updater and apply it. Usually not much of a difference in space used.

Well, speaking of the devil, earlier today Apple released OS 11.2.1, an update to OS 11.2 that's designed to fix some issues with MacBook Pros:

https://9to5mac.com/2021/02/09/macbook-pro-charging-bug-fix-big-sur-11-2-1/

I don't have a MacBook Pro, so I'll skip this update, and wait for OS 11.3 instead (and will do a clean, fresh installation).

There are 3 security-related issues in that OS 11.2.1 update that could be useful to install. And since it's just an update, one would think it would not be a resource :hog", and thus no space issues after applying it.

To re-enforce what jchuzi said above, just saw this:

Maybe best to do a clean, fresh installation. Also, if your device is partitioned, make sure the partition onto which you wish to install Big Sur is large enough.

I don't get it...

The linked article says "On Monday, Apple issued a new installer that properly checks for available disk space."

That would be Monday, Feb.15th, but 11.2.1 was released on the 9th or 10th. (My receipt is dated the 10th.)

And Software update isn't offering me anything. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If your original installation did not have problems then you don't need to update anything. If I recall, the problem affected installations where there was not enough space for the installation process. Presumably the new installer now works correctly in this situation.

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

Is it possible to install the 11.2.1 update OVER an existing 11.2.1 system? That used to be possible when combo updates were available (RIP combos). There is a Big Sur download available at App Store but I don't know if it's the whole shebang or just the update. (I suspect it's the entire OS.)

I installed 11.2.1 when and because Software Update offered it to me, and as I recall, it addressed a battery issue.

And anyway, your response doesn't address the date anomaly.

As far as I know, the App Store offers only full installers, 11.2.1 is the one that's offered at the moment, and it mentions batteries only.

It also says that it was released yesterday, which perpetuates the date anomaly.

And SU hasn't offered me a new update as of the moment.

As there is only one downloadable version of macOS Big Sur available on the App Store it has to be a complete version of macOS 11.x, or else it couldn't be used to upgrade from Catalina or earlier macOS versions. In fact, if you follow these instructions you can use it to create a bootable USB installer on a thumb drive. It works great. There is your combo updater too! Unfortunately if you should want to downgrade or think you might, be sure and keep a copy of each version from the App Store.
