Sadly, I'm not the least bit surprised, and there are still two weeks to go. It's scary to think about what he could do next.

Hopefully the White House electricians have snipped the wires off the big red button.

On a more positive note, I saw a BBC news item hinting that Trump is planning to skip the country on, or before, Inauguration Day--supposedly a trip to play golf at one of his golf courses in Scotland. Scotland's first minister said that he's not welcome. laugh

Hopefully they're not giving him correct nuclear codes!

I've seen speculation that he'll start a war with Iran just to saddle Biden with it.

He's been blocked from Scotland only because of COVID restrictions, but anything that gets him out of the White House sooner rather than later is welcome in my book. Heck, I'll personally invite him to spend the next two weeks playing golf at Dyker Beach Golf Course in Brooklyn. He can crash in my daughter's unused apartment, and I'll spring for the Mcdonald's.

Do his kids actually still support him? Have they neither say nor interest in saying?

Update: I guess not. frown

Two asides:

1. Until yesterday, I was unaware that even if a 2/3 Senate vote to impeach fails, a simple majority vote can still ban the "impeachee" from holding further public office for life.

2. Did anyone else pick up on Sidney Powell's brilliant idea that ALL Georgian Republicans should refrain from voting in the Senatorial elections?

Her astonishingly simplistic theory was that since Dominion's machines flip votes from the Republicans to the Democrats, if no Republicans were to vote, the flipping would result in a negative Republican vote, thus substantiating the fraud that she and Trump have been alleging. (All the same, I'm still surprised that the NY Daily News actually called her "a crazy person" in their front page editorial.)

Let's hope that something actually happens: Aides weigh resignations, removal options as Trump rages against perceived betrayals And here's a question: Can Trump be prosecuted for treason after Biden is inaugurated?

At this point I'd be shocked if neither the 25th nor impeachment is invoked.

Trump has gone waaay too far, and too many people have said too much to now back down from removal.

I can't imagine that he can't be prosecuted for treason, although being a death sentence crime, it would probably be tough to prove.

Judging by Pence's refusal to subvert the vote counting, he was finally able to grow a set of balls, however small. That still does not excuse him from kissing Trump's ass for the last four years. It really fries me that a self-proclaimed Christian can have the moral turpitude to suck up to the Devil. I guess that hypocrisy is not in short supply.

He refused to subvert the vote only because he couldn't subvert it.

I don't doubt that he'd have been perfectly fine with throwing the election to Trump if he could have, if for no reason other than to ensure his position as front runner to succeed him when his second term ended.

This should be a wake-up call (a bit late, however) about American democracy. Here are some good ideas: How to Ensure This Never Happens Again. Personally, I'm pessimistic about any of this happening because of greed and stupidity on the part of elected officials (and I don't exclude Democrats!).

On a frightening but necessary note, Pelosi says she spoke to nation’s... Trump doesn’t launch a nuclear attack

I didn't find anything either as reassuring or amusing as that.

All I found was a generic and unreassuring statement that "procedures are in place." (Does that translate to "mind your own business?")

Nor does that sound to me like the way an officer would speak about another officer, let alone a ranking officer, let alone hir commanding officer. At least not for publication, anyhow.

I've got no idea how authoritative The Military Can’t Legally Curb a President's Access to Nuclear Codes, Experts Say is, but it's certainly frightening.

...military brass worry — and make plans to avert disaster is somewhat reassuring, implying that the first linked article may not be carved in stone.

And it's looking like Trump's going to be in power 'til the 20th.

Anybody got any links to truly authoritative and definitive discussions of the subject?

How about a military coup that puts Biden in power immediately and restores the status quo for his inauguration on the 20th?

Naaah!!!

But Trump can't be allowed to start WWIII just because he's allowed to!

Of course the military cannot deny a President access to the nuclear launch codes, but they can drag their feet and I suspect most would resign rather than reveal them to The Donald. It would surprise me if the Pentagon couldn't drag their collective feet and delay long enough for Trump's term to expire. After all there is a LOT of paperwork that would have to be attended to first and you know how long that can take. How many times during Trump's administration has the Joint Chiefs said, "we are working on an implementation plan" or "we have that under consideration and will get back to you" and stalled long enough that Trump forgot about it? Don't forget that on one occasion Trump tried to deploy troops within the United States and the Joint Chiefs have responded with an unequivocal, and completely constitutional, NO. They have read, and compreneded, the Constitution and if Trump ever read it, It went completely over his head.

As to a military coup, that would be the end of our democracy.

(Sidebar: Has it ever struck you how much Donald Trump's behavior resembles that of Donald Duck? Of course Donald Duck never had Donald Trump's underlying mean streak. DD is likable, DT not so much.)

I see they've arrested about a dozen of the Trump mob (still not nearly enough) and are moving ahead with charges. There is an irony, which is that they could get whacked by a penalty their hero put in place. Trump's order calls for prosecution, to the fullest extent of the law, any person or group that destroys or vandalizes a monument, memorial or statue, and authorizes a penalty of up to 10 years in prison. It seems to me that the 220 year old Capitol building would be categorized a memorial structure.

I've been chewing on this for days, and I keep coming up with the same answer...

Why wouldn't the Joint Chiefs delaying implementing a Constitutionally legal order issued by the Commander In Chief in order to give his successor the opportunity to negate it be considered a military coup in and of itself?

I thought the nuclear codes were delivered to the president every morning. Why Pelosi Can't Take the Nuclear Codes Away from Trump touches on the subject...
Quote
Indeed, there is a military aide who shadows the Commander in Chief day and night, carrying the black briefcase commonly referred to as the “nuclear football,” packed with attack options and other information needed in a national emergency. At any moment’s notice, Trump is legally empowered to order a nuclear attack with America’s arsenal of strategic bombers, missile-launching submarines and land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Perhaps I've been naive, but I've always thought it worked like "The President said "FIRE," so 3-2-1-0..."

If VERIFY: Here's what approval Trump needs before a nuclear attack is accurate, it sheds some light.

So, it appears that Trump doesn't realize that he's leaving office as a disgraced president. News outlets report that he wants a military send-off on the morning of the inauguration. Military send-off, eh. Does a firing squad count?

Anything to draw attention to himself and away from the inauguration of a new President, or from recent reports on his machinations with the insurrectionists he may be seeking the safety of a military escort to get out of D.C. Based on those same reports he will be lucky if he doesn't have a police escort to the D.C. jail on capital charges. Maybe he plans to hijack Air Force One to Cuba — or anywhere without an extradition treaty.

What he deserves is a blacked out SUV, four Federal agents, and a C130 ride to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas to be held pending trial.

And speaking of criminal activity, Atlanta Prosecutor Appears to Move Closer to Trump Inquiry It is obvious that Trump attempted to interfere with the election, a crime. The article compares this to Mafia attempts to rig the legal system. Now, we have Don Trumpleone doing exactly that. Let's hope that the various prosecutors make him an offer he can't refuse.

Since 9/11 more Americans have been killed by domestic terrorists than by Jihadists. The domestic terrorists are the very people that, on January 6th, Trump referred to as 'patriots' and said to them: "We love you."
