I got my info from Can Trump Pre-emptively Pardon Himself? Clemency Power, Explained - The New York Times.

Specifically...
Quote
When a pardon eliminates the possibility that the recipient might be prosecuted for a purely federal crime, it also eliminates the ability of that person to invoke the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination in order to avoid testifying about it. Thus, pardon recipients subpoenaed before Congress or a grand jury would be compelled to talk; if they lied or refused to testify, that would be a new crime.

You're welcome.

Believe me, I am no fan of ACB (or those of her ilk), but she clearly did not "return a favour" to The Donald for his rushed endorsement of her to SCOTUS.

Time will tell if, down the road, she consistently will be able to separate her personal beliefs or professional loyalties from her legal obligations. The "jury is still out" on that (hehehe).

I guess Trump's sister never taught him anything about the judiciary.

They're given lifetime appointments specifically to prevent their integrity from being compromised by politics.

And the Justices' integrity has been demonstrated multiple times, not just in this instance, but by Rehnquist's and RBG's refusals to retire to ensure who would pick their successors, as well as by the fact that Lindsay Graham's plea to the older conservative Justices to retire to allow Trump to pick their successors fell on totally deaf ears.

I got a big laugh from Trump's calling out Bryant's loyalty, because I"d have bet the farm that she'd be true to the Constitution.

And the flip side of the integrity coin is that the Justices' likely indignation over Trump's arrogance as respects them won't affect any future decisions as respects him.

I'm not sure if Trump can't see the wisdom of separation of powers or just can't accept it because it infringes on his perception of his own power.

Mayor Keisha Lance-Bottoms just turned down an, as yet unidentified, Cabinet appointment? Who would do that? And why?

From what I have seen of her, she would be a good and effective candidate for some cabinet job. My guess is that what was offered is not an especially high-profile position. On the other hand, she gets a good deal of CNN airtime as Mayor of her troubled city.

Will have to see if she further explains her decision.

:0)

Well, it's official. Trump has finally lost the few marbles he might have had remaining. First he calls for an insurrection in Washington on January 6th, and then he considers marshall law to overturn the election.

He has to have an insurrection to trigger the use of martial law. What is even more disturbing is how many supposedly knowledgeable GOP senator with law degrees seem willing to support the idea and argue, in essence, the only way to secure democracy is to do away with it.

That's for sure. With a handful of notable exceptions, the entire Republican Party seems to have forgot the concept of a government of the people, by the people and for the people.

Surely there is something in the American constitution that can be enacted when a president is decidedly unbalanced and making dangerous decisions?
I read that some doctors have said that president trump is showing definite signs of dementia and therefore unfit to fulfil his duties.
Who in government has the authority to initiate such a procedure?

Very concerned Canadian.

The 25th Amendment does exactly that, but it depends upon the members of the cabinet having the balls guts to actually do something right.

Hah! Ronald Reagan suffered from Alzheimers for an unknown portion of his Presidency.

When he answered "I don't remember" to all those questions during the Iran-Contra hearings, he apparently wasn't sandbagging; he really just plain didn't remember.

But at least he didn't suffer from underlying psychoses that exacerbated his behavior.

In Trump's case, I think his wife and kids ought to go to court and get him involuntarily committed.

What are the chances of that happening?

With luck, he'll fade quickly and disappear from public view, which would be a most ideal turn of events other than that it would leave him incapable of understanding the charegs against him, which is a tradeoff I'd happily accept.

His kids (and ex-Federal Judge sister, perhaps) will still be around to face the music to the extent of their involvement.

Cabinet members derive their authority to act in that case because they have been nominated by the President and approved by the "advice and consent" of the Senate. Trump has methodically gotten rid of any cabinet member that doesn't worship at his outhouse and appointed "acting" replacements, without any intention of. submitting anyone to the Senate for approval. Arguably, as "acting" cabinet members they lack the authority to act in the event of an incapacitated President. Besides that, Trump could easily fire them if they show any semblance of authority.

Like a rejected spoiled child, Trump appears determined to do as much damage to the nation as possible on his way out the door. Even to leaving the government totally shut down unless some GOP Senator grow some backbone. Perhaps in hopes the electorate will change their minds and proclaim him as President for life.

In Canada, the House of Commons has the ability to pass a "Vote of No Confidence" for a sitting Prime Minister. In effect, s/he can be FIRED. It is a process, true, but it can be done. (I believe, a half dozen times in Canada's history.)

Don't let the door hit you on your way out.

The electorate has already done so with the "magnificent landslide" it gave him, but fortunately, it's only inside his own head.

I am neither a psychologist nor psychiatrist but your phrase "it's only inside his own head" triggered a thought. So I checked and Trump exhibits all of the nine signs of a Narcissistic Personality Disorder listed in DSM 5 (only five are necessary for a clinical diagnosis). NPD is notoriously difficult to treat. He would likely rather see the United States devolve into a bloody civil war rather than ever concede defeat. Sadly, he is likely be with us and creating chaos until he is either locked away in a secure facility of some kind or the first spade of dirt hits his coffin.

If you haven't picked up on it elsewhere, his personal coat-of-arms screams "NEVER CONCEDE!"

And yeah, you're on the mark: he ain't going away quietly. frown mad

I still like my idea of every agreeable media posting a HUGE headline in bold red face, above a pic of him, saying, simply: "LOSER!" after Congress has finally ended the mayhem.

It will be his absolute worst nightmare come to fruition, and it maaay just drive him over the edge into one of those secure facilities.

The partisan bull#$%& aside, this is a VERY strong rebuke from a Murdoch publication.

I LOVE "Sidney Powell is a crazy person!"

And I think it's the first front page I've seen that, rather than saying "Biden won," says "Trump lost."
