OS 10.12.6
For the first time in my life I took some photos as raw files. I set my camera to raw/jpeg fine. when I tried to open the raw files, they were set to open with adobe photoshop but the message said 'photoshop does not recognize this type
of file. So I set to open with preview but a message said preview does not support this raw file format. I then tried to open them with "Skitch" but a message said the files were too big. The other options are App Store & other.
Can someone tell me how to view these raw files (listed as Nikon Electronic Format files)

I haven't tested this on the Mac, but in my iPhone and iPad I use Photos.

Joe, I tried photos and it opened the photos app and at the bottom was a rectangle and a triangle within which had an exclamation mark. Upon clicking that icon, for a split second the image appeared but that was as far as it went.

In desperation I tried a couple of apps but they were greyed and I even gave iTunes a whirl which for some unknown reason, allowed it to used as "open with" but of course to no avail.

Hopefully someone will come up with a solution. Thanks Joe,

I know nothing about the subject, but a search turned up How to Convert a NEF on a Mac, which seems like it may be helpful.

Good luck!

Which version of Photoshop are you using? Your OS is a a bit dated but you can try Adobe DNG converter. The linked version works with 10.12 but newer versions, as far as I can tell, do not.

Thank you for that Artie. I will have to take a good look at that article but it seems like it's quite a bit involved to convert NEF files.

I am using photoshop 10, quite ancient. The small amount of times I use '10' doesn't warrant me getting a later version. Adobe seems bent on having their users pay lifetime monthly fees. I use a Nikon D7500 which I thought would have made it more convenient to convert raw files...however. I have just downloaded Adobe DNG converter with which I will try out later today but it does look more promising. I will let you know how it goes. Regarding my OS, updating will incur quite an expense re the various apps I have and at my age (91) I figure it is not worth it. Thanks Jon.

Jon, That Adobe DNG converter you suggested worked so easily, I couldn't believe my eyes. Thank you thank you.

GraphicConverter 11.0 ($39.95) has a RAW Developer function and has been a Mac staple for nineteen or twenty years. I have multiple image editing and drawing tools, including the entire Affinity suite (❤️) but I use Graphic Converter more than all the others put together.

Great! And best of all, it's free. FWIW, I bit the bullet and signed up for Photoshop CC. Although I resent how Adobe gouges its customers, it only costs $10.79 per month, charged automatically to my PayPal account. The features in PS CC are worth the price to me, especially the ease of making selections

If you want to do more with the raw photos and don't need the monthly cost or power of Photoshop, then Photoshop Elements 2021 may work for you. It is an outright purchase at $99. Then again, the tools in Apple Photos may be more than adequate. There are also many applications between Photos and Photoshop Elements that may meet your needs. Post back if you would like some recommendations.

I did look at PSE 2021 and I cannot find out if (1) it will run on Sierra and (2) can I get an upgrade. I believe Adobe do not make reimbursements. I think I will stick with PSE 10 for now.

They do offer an upgrade for $79 for any version of PSE, BUT the requirements are osMac 14 or higher.
