macbk pro / snow leopard (installed upgrade 2 days ago)
((10.6.1; macbkpro 2.4 GHz intel core 2 duo MHz / 2 GB 667 ram))
Not sure what happened . all was going along well and normally after having updated to snow leopard two days ago. no problems
was playing a simple game (match three type) tonight > closed lid to sleep for a few minutes > opened lid > no response > pressed power button > machine powered up (after shutting down) >
now everything is supersized: fonts / icons/ websites etc. there is also a smaller screen with black on either side .
repaired permissions: message: " SUID File 'system / library / core S... has been modified and will not be repaired"
any ideas ?

Sounds like you resolution setting somehow got florfed. Check /Applications/System Preferences>Displays, and see what your setting is; I believe it should be the bottom number. Hope this helps. If no joy, try zapping PRAM, and then check your resolution setting again.

Success Artie ! that was it !
the resolution had reset to 640 X 480 !!!!!!
I really appreciate your quick and helpful response. thanks !!!!
having just upgraded (via software update instead of my usual downloading directly from the apple site -- temporarily lazy!) do you think that could have had something to do with this occurance ? Am tempted to download a fresh update and reinstall just in case . What do you think /??

and... while I'm at it ;-)
Could simple games ( match three type) that were compatible and played nice with leopard be suddenly incompatible for snow leopard ????

I'm happy to have helped, Sue. and... while I'm at it ;-)
Could simple games ( match three type) that were compatible and played nice with leopard be suddenly incompatible for snow leopard ???? I know zilch about games, but I do know that Snow Leopard has made some (major?) changes in graphics handling, so I suppose it's possible, if not likely, that any game might need a compatibility fix; check with your game's developer.

will do, Artie.
now for that other question re would it be advisable to take a few moments and download snow leopard from the apple site now, even if I have already installed the 10.6.1 version from software update . (see above)??

(see above)?? (Sorry for overlooking that question.) Can't hurt... There have been scattered reports of users obtaining better results from updaters d/l'ed directly from Apple than from those d/l'ed by Software Update. Note: Since 10.6.1 is the first in a forthcoming string of updates there is no "Combo Updater," but for future updates I recommend your using "Combos" d/l'ed directly from Apple. Edit: > "having just upgraded (via software update [....]"Nomenclature alert: Up grade means install a new version of OS X, i.e. you upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard; up date means install the next up-tick of a version,i.e. you update from 10.6.0 to 10.6.1.

thanks Artie. I hadn't realized there was no combo for the "update" ;-) (noted ;-)

Could simple games ( match three type) that were compatible and played nice with leopard be suddenly incompatible for snow leopard ???? Based on personal experience "simple" games, and in fact any games, that play with screen resolution, as so many do, could easily be the source of the problem. At least similar things have happened to me in the past. I can postulate any number of reasons why this may happen.

My experience with simple games (two) is that they migrated without a problem from Leopard to Snow Leopard. But the Mod is right about their effects on resolution, although I have not experienced these changes for a long time..
