I like to look at my inbox and my sent box in date order. I am always have to change it. Is there a way to make it permanent? I mean, is there a terminal command or something else I can do?

Thanks.

That should stick. It's possible that you have a corrupted preference file. Quit Mail. Move ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist to the desktop and relaunch Mail. (You may have to reset your preferences, of course.) If the problem is solved, you can trash that plist. If not, quit Mail, move the plist back, and relaunch Mail.

Hi, Rita.

Without getting into the nitty gritty, I'll suggest that after you move that plist to your desktop you restart your MBP before you relaunch Mail.

Good suggestion, Artie. I don't know if that's necessary but it certainly won't hurt.

These two posts by ganbustein deal with moving plists...

http://www.finetunedmac.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=31858&#Post31858

http://www.finetunedmac.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=32425&#Post32425

I never use Terminal when I can do something "seat of the pants," rather I move my plist and restart, and it has been a reliable procedure.

I can't find my mail plist. I went to Library, Preferences and then couldn't find it. The search bar is useless as it calls up everything but what I want. Why doesn't the search bar bring up stuff in the preferences folder only? I get don't get why it pulls stuff from all over my Mac except for what I want. Typing in plist doesn't work at all either.

Make sure you go to your User's Library (that's what "~" indicates) and not the Library associated with your Mac HD. It can be found in the User's Library, never fear.

For me too the Finder search does not reveal the .plist for Mail. That could be a "safety" measure by Apple to protect us from ourselves. wink

If you have problems getting to your user library, click the Go menu in Finder, select Go To Folder, and type (or paste) ~/Library. Then, press Return. (In case ~ is not easily visible on your screen, it's the tilde at the upper left of the keyboard, just below esc.)

Wrong folder! You want ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist.

It said "the folder cannot be found" when I did it this way.

When I paste " ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist" (NO quotes) into a Go to Folder window it takes me right there.

If not, just type in ~/Library and navigate.

I'm not sure why it didn't work the first time, but this time it did. How do I get it to my desktop. I clicked "control" and got some options but no "move to" options except trash. I couldn't drag it either.

You could trash it and then drag it from Trash to the desktop. Of course, you could leave it in Trash for later retrieval, but that's risky; you might inadvertently empty Trash.

Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking. I will trash it and drag it out now and continue on to see what happens after I shut down and reopen everything. Thank you.

OK. That didn't work. I noticed that after I put it in the trash, it replicated itself immediately in Finder. So, if it is corrupted, it just replicated the same corrupt file, I guess. I decided to quit mail and then go to Finder and do it all over again but, again, I got the "the folder can't be found" message. Cripes!

When you drag a plist out of its parent folder, a new, pristine plist is created to replace it (that could explain your observation). Also, you should drag the plist out while Mail is not open. Try resetting your Mail preferences and see if they stick.

Yes, I was trying to do that but once again ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist doesn't work. I just hear an error bell. I even reactivated mail to see if it would work that way, but nope. It only worked once for me. frown

Just enter "~/Library" (No quotes) in Go to Folder and navigate from there to /Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist BY HAND.

That plist replicates itself if Mail isn't quit when it's trashed, and it will do the same if it's trashed after Mail is quit but before you restart, which is why the restart is necessary.

I can't imagine why you couldn't just drag that file from its home to your desktop; it's one of the few things that Apple hasn't prohibited yet. tongue

It didn't work, but I noticed when I did it by hand or the other way as mentioned with the Go to Folder, it's taking me to the Mac HD list not the users list. I don't know how to get to the user's list, I guess. I must have done it once but now it's not getting me there.

If it's taking you to the Mac HD list rather than the users list it's because you didn't enter the tilde, i.e. "~/Library; you just entered /Library without the tilde.

Not true. I go to Finder-Go to Folder-paste in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and click go. I just get the ding sound when one tries to do something and can't on a Mac. I hope you know what I mean by that.

This is getting silly, so it's time for something completely different.

This shows you how to make your home folder permanently visible.

You should be able to take it from there.

That's the wrong library.

It's /Library, and it's always been visible. The one you want is /Users/yourshortname/Library. You want to see it when you click on your little house.

Did you try following the instructions?
