I live in Brooklyn, NY, and Google's got no problem tracking my IP address to the Verizon switching station a mile and a half up the road, so why does Apple think I live in Buffalo, NY?

Thanks.

Is this a recent belief on Apple's part? Could it be a hacker in Buffalo establishing themselves on an Apple account of yours?

Where is Apple saying you live in Buffalo? In what context?

Responding to both you and ryck...

Google
iCloud
Home Depot

Any number of entities other than eBay place me close to where I actually am, but iCloud and Home Depot are the only ones that place me elsewhere.

I see "Buffalo" only when I, myself, go to icloud.com or homedepot.com, and I've never experienced anything untoward with/on either website, so I consider a hacker to be a non-issue.

It's apparently some function of the Internet itself?

Perish the thought of living anywhere in NYC other than in Brooklyn!!!

[rant] Brooklyn is far and away the best part of NYC...as long as you're willing to accept that in some respects other than quality of life you can do better elsewhere.

Unfortunately, though, many Brooklynites find it necessary to justify living in Brooklyn by deluding themselves into thinking that restaurants, shopping, et. al. are equivalent to what they'd find in Manhattan, and they're losing out. [/rant]

I hadn't run into this before, but since you brought it up I did some checking. According to WhatIsMyIP with my iPhone and Mac mini physically less than a foot apart the iPhone is in Redmond, WA 😲, and the Mac mini is in Fort Worth, TX 👍. According to ip-adress-lookup.com the iPhone is in Plano, TX some 50 miles from here 👎.

The difference appears to be a function of the specific server that is tapped for the information. Theoretically they should all be synchronized, but… Perhaps it is a function of whether a V4 or V6 IP address is used for the search. In the case of my wandering iPhone the local switch is in Fort Worth, the regional hub is in Plano, and the providers corporate headquarters are in Redmond. So at some level all three locations are correct. Misleading as H___ but technically accurate. If I were using a VPN the location might be almost anywhere in the world.

My sister in Oregon is often told that she is signing in from Texas. Maybe joemikeb has her MacBook. That would certainly simplify my tech work with her. wink

Thanks.

That qualifies as a sufficient explanation.

Your first link places me in New York, NY; your second link is a dead end.

Try https://www.ip-address-lookup.com. It was too late to correct the initial post.

Another site is https://www.iplocation.net which places you in New York at Latitude 40.7143 and longitude -74.0060 which according to Apple Maps is The Sun Building across the street from City Hall Park?? How close is that?

but as for my location...

It's 7 miles from me. I've never seen a Manhattan location before, and according to Wikipedia et. al. it's occupied by the NYC Department of Buildings.

Got me beat!
