....I had major surgery Friday morning and a bit distracted and/or unconscious in the interim. Get well soon. At any age, but especially ours, major surgery is never fun. As Bette Davis said: "Growing old is not for sissies."

You somehow changed the title of this thread to "ifs." That's what get for typing with a pulseoximeter strapped to my finger 🙄

I hope your surgery was uneventful and successful, and that the pulse oximeter is telling you what you want to hear! Your dedication to FTM, even under adverse conditions, is beyond admirable!

I second Artie's sentiments. May you have a speedy and uneventful recovery.

MG2009, did you ever diagnose the issue? I am seeing the exact same problem as you described, on a Fusion Drive in a 2014 iMac. I can erase, run first aid, on the SSD portion. Any attempt to access the HDD portion fails, whether through terminal or Disk utility, always ending with "Cannot write to the end of blocks."
Has the HDD simply failed, requiring replacement?

I did EXTENSIVE searching online and found no solution. I took the iMAC into a local authorized Apple repair shop. He did a thorough "check" which ran just under two hours. The HD was TOAST (although that was not the exact word the technician used). Sorry . . . this story had a sad ending. :0)
