I think of myself as a reasonably peaceful person but then, when I read one of these stories, I realize I probably could be moved to inflict serious damage on another human.

I share your sentiments. I once found a man cowering in the corner of stall where a two year old thoroughbred colt was trying his best to stomp the guy to death because he had been trying to abuse the animal. (I had run the man off twice earlier in the day and he had waited until I went to lunch to try again.) I grabbed the colt's halter and calmed him down when the man started shouting that he would have the "killer" horse put down. I closed the stall gate and told the man, "One more sound out of you and I will open this gate and let this colt have you." We never saw that man again. Now, that was satisfying.
If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

A subsequent news report showed the now very happy dog with its new owner. Contrary to the first report the dog looked to me to be mostly Belgian Malinois, a shepherding breed that is very smart and loyal.
