I wake up in morning and I see 6 redundant messages that TM was not ejected properly. Yet it's there on desktop fine. Anyone know what this is?

This was a common problem with certain USB hubs and USB drves and past iterations of Mac OS's. I used to experience the same phenomenon, but since at least OS 13.x and beyond the issue is gone.

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

thanks Ira, interesting. I"m on Mojave, the drive is a few years old, and hub a few years old. Issue only with TM and it just started, so stumped. Not much I can do?

I ran into a similar problem a few weeks ago and it turned out to be a connecting data cable that had gone bad. Replacing the cable fixed the situation. The only diagnostic used in that case was a combination of years of experience (I had seen connecting cables go bad in the past), cost to repair (the cable was the least expensive item to replace), and intuition (ie. a fortuitous guess).

The danger with a drive not being properly disconnected is when it occurs concurrently with the computer writing to the drive which can create an error in the data. Fortunately the window for such an error occurring is very narrow and therefore the likelihood of damage is small quite small. Disk Utility is capable of detecting and in most cases correcting such errors. If not then one of the industrial strength disk utilities (Drive Genius, TechTool Pro, DiskWarrior) might be needed.

Personally I wouldn't worry too much about damage, but it would not hurt to run Disk Utility > First Aid just to be sure. I definitely would want to run down the cause of the disconnections however. The most common causes in my experience are a bad data cable, bad data connector/connection on the Mac or drive, bad power which could be the result of any number of causes including:
  • Noisy A/C power from the wall
  • Failing surge protector
  • Bad or loose power connection or cable between the drive power supply and the wall
  • Bad or loose connection or cable between the power supply and the drive
  • Failing drive power supply

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

Thanks JOe, well actually I bought the APC UPS battery backup, power surge protector, which I did not have and did not help.

I then put a different USB cable and it did not help.. so who knows..

Your last few ideas may be the culprit, who knows.

I was not even thinking or worrying about damage at all.. as this is TM , not a main data drive. And it seems to still back up ok. Just a jarring nuisance to see 5 messages that the drive was ejected in the morning (luckily only see it ounce a week); hence I guess I let it go, not worry about it. thanks again.

Update from this morning:

https://postimg.cc/HcMyrMkX

Never seen so many, usually 1-4.

What is this? And why does this only show in morning, never during the 12 hours I"m awake doing work at home?

I have tested cable and plugged the hardrive into an APC backup- neither solved it. thanks.

I suspect the problem is showing up in the console logs, but it may not be easy or obvious to spot and could require digging through a LOT of log files to locate. Etrecheck or the more limited App Store version might be able to provide clues to the source of the disconnects. No guarantees but the basic version is free and can do no harm.

Etrecheck is designed for use by everyone but if it reports a problem you cannot fathom there are several around here who could assist you in understanding what it is telling you. Given that there are free versions what would you have to lose for downloading and running it?

Unfortunately the free version of Etrecheck does not have the analytical capability of Etrecheck Pro (paid version) but the most obvious thing I noticed is at the bottom of the report is three crash reports in two days. If you could find one or more of those crash reports in the Console app and post the first 30 or so lines it might be helpful. (Note that is MIGHT be helpful — I make no guarantees.) I run beta software which is notorious for being unstable and that would be a high number of crash reports on my system unless there was some underlying problem.

The next obvious thing I noticed is the very large number of LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons you have, several of which are failing to launch. That would lead me to believe your system would benefit greatly from a thorough and ruthless housecleaning to be sure all of those are still needed and are current.

Is your Time Machine drive by any chance a Seagate drive? I noticed there are Seagate drivers that are not installing. If it is you Time Machine Drive was it attached and powered on when you ran Etrcheck?

thanks Joe, I have 3 fairly new Seagate externals, and one is TM.

I don't know who to do much of that stuff. Someone said, you? those launch deamons are harmless. I have no idea how to get rid of them.

Took a peek into console, have no idea where to find those crashes.

TM was powered and fine when I did etrecheck, and in fact, every morning when see those eject notices, the drive is always 100% mounted. And only get those badges in morning, never ever when I'm awake.

I just had a thought that might be worth exploring. Go to System Preferences > Energy Saver and UNcheck Put hard disk to speed when possible.

thanks Joe, will uncheck that and see if it solves it. Someone recommended to uncheck wake up for network, which I did, and that did not solve it, but may reduce the annoying badges that come up at night on upper right of computer.

Darn Joe, the "UNcheck Put hard disk to speed when possible."

Did not work, But just one message this morning.

any downside to keeping that unchecked. Don't really understand pro/ cons of it.

Did notice that this morning, the computer woke up, did not ask or want it to and Paralles was up on screen. That app Paralles maybe does cause some havoc? I did notice actually this started when I installed that a few months ago. They claim they have nothing to do with TM issue eject .. but..?

Just one message is at least an improvement! I wouldn't expect Parallels to cause direct interference with Time Machine, and especially not an unexpected disconnect error, but sometimes the error messages can be misleading and can have little or nothing to do with the actual error that is occurring.

Suggestion: When the unexpected disconnect errors occur, make a list of every task running in your system (Activity Monitor > File > Print can be a big help with that) then look to see what app or apps are commonly running when the disconnects occur. I would sort Activity monitor by Process name and user on the assumption that the problem is most likely a user initiated process.

thanks Joe, mentioned I'm not aware when these occur. Which to me is another very BIZARRE part of the story. I get these consistently in the morning, but never even one time ever during waking hours..

Does that effect your suggestion. Does that info help at all?

It does not effect my suggestion. The assumption is the running tasks are not going to stop running since the error has been known to repeat itself. The idea is to identify potential causal tasks and thereby shrink the solution space. It may take three for four sets of data to identify potential culprit(s).

Joe, thanks, I think I'd have to fly you in, and pay you top dollar of course, to figure this one out. So I'll probably just live with this one!
