I'm using High Sierra 13.6 and pretty much all my 32 bit apps work just fine, but I have been eyeballing Mojave 10.14. Every thing I've read here and elsewhere suggests 10.14 is fine with 32 bit apps, so I'm thinking of moving to it before Mojave goes to 10.15. It's been reported that, with 10.15, all 32 bit apps will be dead in the water.

However, I haven't seen anything about 10.14 and 32 bit printer software....and I'd really hate to have to toss a perfectly good printer that does everything I need. It's an old Canon Pixma MX710.

Anybody here using that Canon, or any other older Canon, with Mojave 10.14? If so, how's it working out?

My Canon imageCLASS LBP6000 with its 32 bit driver stopped working in Mojave, but I"ve never been certain of why, because it was my only 32 bit app that failed me.

Happily, though, Canon released a 64 bit driver for it 3 months after Mojave was released, so you may get equally lucky if you check out your Pixma.

If not, I suggest that you upgrade a clone of High Sierra to Mojave and see what happens.

If it runs, you're OK until macOS 10.15 La Brea Tar Pits breaks it, and if it doesn't, you can do as I did until I got lucky, which is upgrade, but maintain a separate volume to boot into to print; it's a PIA, but if you don't print much you may find it preferable to buying a new printer.

I am using a Canon PIXMA610 with the single problem of scanning a document and I am running 10.14.3, quite happily, I might add.

I did not know about the potential 'threat' with 10.15 ....

Would I be correct to assume that the scanning software is MP Navigator Ex ? Is it Ver. 5.1.2 ?

For about 6 months, I've read it in a few places......Mojave 10.15 will be when Apple finally says: "We're done with 32 bit". People are recommending that, if you have 32 bit apps and want to go to Mojave...do it before 10.15.

The critical change in macOS 10.15 (we won't know what to call it until the WWDC in June) is the deletion/removal of all the 32 bit APIs (Application Program Interface) that connect the application to the OS and its kernel. Those APIs HAVE NOT BEEN DELETED FROM MOJAVE so 32 bit apps should continue to work and that includes printer drivers. The key is EXECUTABLES as they are the users of APIs. Depending on the developer, printer drivers may, or may NOT, have an executable component. Often the executable component may be an installer, uninstaller, or service application included with the printer installation.
  1. Run the System Information app in your Utilities folder,
  2. Click on Software > Applications
  3. click on the column labeled 64 bit
  4. click on the sort arrow so that it points ^
You will see a list of all the non-64 bit executables on your system. (NOTE: this is a more complete list than is generated by Etrecheck)

At the moment I have an app named "InkServer" on my system another named "quicklookd32" and the developer of both is identified as Apple. laugh

There are factors other than 32 bit APIs that can cause a printer driver to quite working. Many of the original APIs have been deprecated and later deleted and their functionality moved to new APIs or merged into existing APIs. The same thing is true of the Unix command line commands that undergird much of the functionality of MacOS. If developers have ceased to maintain their app or driver or have simply been inattentive to the changes, which are typically announced two or three years in advance an upgrade to the OS could make the app/driver non-functional or at least semi-functional. Some printer manufacturers have been noticeably unwilling to support changes for printers that are no longer in production. Even if they sell you a replacement printer for less than the cost of building it, they figure on making it up in sales of the latest and highest priced ink or toner.

Canon has released a 64 bit driver for your printer (at the URL at the top of the image).

Unfortunately, though, its included apps won't open in my Mojave, so your printer looks to be be a dead issue down the road all the same unless you opt for a print-only volume.

Thanks very much. I've downloaded the dmg and am keeping it in my back pocket.

By "down the road" do you mean Mojave 10.15? I'm thinking, if I go to 10.14, I'll stay there as long as possible.

Print-only wouldn't work for me. I do a fair amount of scanning.

By "down the road", I meant macOS 10.15 La Brea Tar Pits, but if the latest driver doesn't work in 10.14 Mojave, as appears to be the case, you'll be stuck in 10.13 High Sierra.

Sorry for not being specific. "Print only" meant "only to use your Pixma, not just for printing per se", but if you need to use it with any sort of frequency, it would be too much of a PIA.

I'll guess that if Canon hasn't released a Mojave compatible driver for your Pixma by now, it's probably a dead issue.

Why don't you contact them and see what they've got to say about it?

This may be feasible: If you've got a spare Mac lying around you can keep it booted into a Pixma compatible volume for scanning and printing only, but getting data from one Mac to the other would be a PIA.

No means the listed executables are not 674 bit and will NOT work with the successor to Mojave. In this case neither the on screen manual and quick menu are essential to the functioning of the canon printer. They are in fact somewhat outdated utilities that I doubt you ever run.

These are the essential drivers for your canon printer and the "Yes" means they are 64 bit and will work with the successor to Mojave. You are good to go.

Or maybe not.

As per Canon Mp Navigator Software Download – MP Navigator EX, ryck's MP Navigator Ex Ver. 5.1.2 may not even be compatible with Mojave, let alone its successor.

Quote:
MP Navigator EX Ver. 5.1.2 (macOS 10.13/macOS 10.12/OS X 10.11/OS X 10.10/OS X 10.9/OS X 10.8/Mac OS X 10.7)

File Details
History [Ver.5.1.2]- macOS High Sierra (10.13) has been added as a supported OS.
File Size: 36 MB
Filename: mnve_5_1-mac-all-5_1_2-ea11.dmg
(Emphasis added)

A call to Canon is still in order.

More: I said above that the apps in my linked driver (that I was able to "examine") wouldn't open in my Mojave, but I failed to say that the error message suggested that a version incompatibility was the culprit.

Not yet. I haven't phoned but will if I can't get a response to my written inquiry. When I placed my question, from inside my Canon account, I noted that there are a bazillion 64 bit drivers for Windows. However, there wasn't even one shown for OS 13.

The one I linked to is both 64 bit and macOS 10.13 compatible, but, as far as I can tell, NOT 10.14 compatible.

Which means I don't require it, as I am OS 13.6 and everything works perfectly. The issue is moving to OS 14 and still have everything working well.

As the System Information Utility indicated, and joemike confirmed, I appear to have all the 64 bit drivers I need. However, there's still a mystery. Where did I get them?

I'm pretty good about keeping software up-to-date and, where my drivers are concerned, I would not have downloaded from anywhere except the Canon site or Apple. But now, when I go to Canon and select my printer, they show nothing for either OS 13 or OS 14. It doesn't make any sense to me that they would once have had the drivers but no longer post them. It's a question I want to ask, once I am able to engage Canon.

If anyone else has thoughts, I'd like to hear.

This took some digging.

I finally found your referenced MP Navigator Ex Ver. 5.1.2 here; it IS 10.13 compatible, but, as per my experimentation, it's NOT 64 bit.

The latest driver for your Pixma appears to be Pixma MX710 series CUPS Printer Driver for macOS 10.13...16.20.0, found here; it's both 10.13 compatible and 64 bit, but, as per my experimentation, it's NOT 10.14 compatible. Since you've got 64 bit apps, you seem to have d/l'ed it at some point.

But the bottom line appears to be that you're NOT "good to go" in either 10.14 or 10.15 despite your 64 bit apps, because the driver, ITSELF, is NOT compatible.

(For what it's worth:
  1. Your Pixma MX 710 no longer appears on Canon's website, here, and
  2. the driver for a Pixma MX712, which I assume (Yeah, I know! tongue ) followed your 710, and which has apparently also been discontinued, found here, shows "There is no driver for the OS Version you selected. The driver may be included in your OS or you may not need a driver." when I select 10.14, and
  3. there appears to be a separate scanner driver for 10.13, which d/l's as MP Navigator Ex Ver. 5.1.2, listed on the same page, but I couldn't even examine it with Pacifist..."Missing file" error, let alone test it.)
YEAH! I'm confused too. confused

Just an observation, but since CUPS (Common Unix Print System) is a built-in feature of macOS since the first OS X beta I have to wonder why it would not work. Unless Canon is doing something really funky there shouldn't be any executable in a CUPS driver so 32 vs 64 bit should not be at issue. I would expect more problems with the scanner driver myself as it will have executable code — lots of it. You MAY be able to solve that problem with Vuescan (they offer a free trial).

NOTE: For printers no longer in production it is usual for testing and certification to come to a screeching halt. So just because the Canon web site lists macOS 10.13 as the most recent OS version it is compatible with may only mean it was the last macOS version it was tested with and it MAY work well with later OS versions. The printer driver itself may work well but one or more of the add-on utilities may not work. Personally I would give the CUPS version a try and maybe even the non-CUPS version. Although it may have failed on Artie's machine there is an outside chance it would work on yours.

Just to clarify, I haven't got the device in question, so I (did the best I could do and) opened the CUPS d/l in Pacifist and found CanonIJPrinterUtility.app & CIJAutoSetupTool.app, which I extracted to my desktop; they were both 64 bit, but neither would launch, and both returned this error message, which suggests to me that 10.14 is the issue.

Despite my negative results in an almost identical situation, I'd say that it's worth a try, particularly since the alternative is buying a new device.

To digress momentarily, kudos to VueScan. I sent a note to them yesterday morning via their Problem Report link and, before the morning was out, got a reply with a link to the scanner driver. For me, a big part of judging a publisher is seeing how they respond to customers (or potential customers). VueScan gets "two thumbs up".

I know you're talking about printers, but I'm having the same problem with my Canon scanner and ended up on VueScan's site. They have software that will allow me to continue to use my perfectly good 8800F scanner when I have to replace my MacPro5,1 with a new iMac.

It will cost (roughly) £40 to get a flatbed scan, but £90 to use the scanner to its full potential (film).

A new flatbed Canon scanner (including software) is £65. I suppose I should stump up the extra £25 to prolong the 8800F's life and "save the planet". But, how much longer will this 10-year-old scanner last?

I upgraded my Super Duper backup to Mojave and neither the printer nor the scanner worked. The Canon software kept returning the caution "Printer is not attached" and my MP Navigator EX scanner software didn't even load its windows.

Oh well.

My day-to-day non-critical scanning is all done on my Canon printer and I have an Epson Perfection V500 for work requiring higher quality. It's 32 bit so, when I am forced to move to a newer OS, I'll definitely be looking at VueScan.

That's precisely what happened with my discontinued Canon imageCLASS LBP6000 printer, but after I had given it up for dead, I happened to be on Canon's website, and lo and behold, there, dated January 19, 2019, 4 months after Mojave's release, was a Mojave compatible driver.

I was as shocked as I was pleased, but it looks as if you're not going to have any such luck. (Your device was apparently discontinued "long" before mine was, because it doesn't appear on Canon's website any more while mine still does.)

I wonder if you might benefit from a visit to VueScan. It's worth a try if it might restore your scanning function.

Just occurred to me... Was that with the CUPS driver? And if not, you ought to try it.

CUPS driver?....darned if I know...I just hit print and the system decided which driver it liked. Could have been Minnie Driver, for all I know.

It's too late to try anything new as I've already restored my Super Duper backup...just felt odd not to have my backup.

Just for future reference, if needed, the CUPS driver is the 10.13 compatible item here.

I think it's the latest one for your Pixma...released simultaneously with High Sierra, but it didn't run in MY Mojave...version error, so I guess it's a dead end.
