Can documents go into the sidebar?

It seems only folders glide into the favorites section of the side bar easily. When I try documents, like word files, they wont go.
Though I have one word doc there, that I put a year ago, not sure how I got it there.

macOS 10.14.2 I just enabled "Documents" in my sidebar to experiment, and I was able to drag Excel and TextEdit docs to it, but they didn't display as individual docs, rather as docs within a folder named Documents. ( See pic) To get them in there, I dragged my docs on top of "Documents" until I saw a +. (40 secs to post)

I'm looking to just have documents in there.. possible..? Just documents in where? Your "Documents" sidebar item? Or your sidebar in general? Your question is unclear to me.

I can't speak to the version of OS X you are running, but in 10.14.x documents can not go into that sidebar area.
The workaround I use is to create folders that represent a "theme", move those folders into the sidebar and put similar documents (or an alias) in the appropriate folders. In this way I can readily access a few documents without having to go into the Documents folder.
On a Mac since 1984. Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

In 10.14.2, the Documents folder created in your sidebar when you check Finder/Prefs > Sidebar > Documents is an alias to ~/Library/Documents, which is not what kevs is looking for. Your workaround rules! (10 secs)

Thanks Ira, I'm on High Sierra. So documents, CANNOT go on side bar, only folders? If so, how lame is that?
Of course, I have zillion folders, which are by definition populated with things pertaining to that folder, but some files are so important it would be nice to drag them in the sidebard. I did get one to go there once, not sure why/ how that worked.

I'm running High Sierra, and I can put documents in the sidebar by command-dragging them there. (It's also possible to put documents in the toolbar the same way.)

I stand corrected: in Mojave a command-drag accomplishes the same thing.

I have High Sierra 10.13.6, with a Documents folder in the sidebar, and I quite readily place and remove documents, folders etc from it will great facility just by clicking and dragging.

Your Documents folder is an alias to ~/Library/Documents...not an unique entity.
kevs, Ira, and DK are talking about individual documents.

Your Documents folder is an alias to ~/Library/Documents Minor correction: the alias is to ~/Documents. No Library involved.
