I installed Mojave by upgrading a clone of my High Sierra installation, and I won't bore you with the initial traumas, because they all disappeared after a shut down/startup except that dark mode wasn't enabled as I had selected during setup.

It's sorta worth noting that Mojave booted when the installer said I still had 17 minutes to go.

So far, the only glitches I've noticed are my NoSleep menu bar icon won't draw...leaves an empty space, but clicking on the empty space does invoke its functionality, and Battery Health Monitor is dead...no big deal.

I'm working in dark mode to get a feel for it, and so far, I kinda like it.

So far, so good, except for Battery Health Monitor which is "Unable to read battery status data", but I don't think it's got anything to do with its 32 bit-ness, rather that it just hasn't been updated in 9 years and has now been relegated to the trash by some change or other in Mojave.

Update: I just found an update to BHM on its dev's website that was never posted to MacUpdate, and it's now 64 bit and back in business.

More: BHM is the second app who's developer I asked to update to 64 bit that was actually updated without the update having been posted to MacUpdate.

I think we all owe a HUGE vote of thanks to people like joemike whose beta testing of recent macOS upgrades has probably been at the root of their running issuelessly from the get-go!!!

Dark mode was an interesting experiment, but I don't like it and have reverted to "Light".

So far, Mojave is fine except my mail notification app no longer works and its dev now works for Apple and isn't allowed to update it. frown

As to 32-bit apps, do you use Entourage 2008 and, if so, is it working?

Have you tried System Preferences > Notifications?

In the early Mojave beta a number of "helper" apps quit working or became unreliable and left me looking for work-arounds. Most ended up being replaced by Mojave functions and those have worked so well I never bothered to check and see if the app ever got updated.

Thanks for the suggestion, but Herald is a plugin and isn't listed under Notifications; my bad for calling it an app.

Point noted, but be aware Mojave's System Preferences control system utilities access and functionality not just for apps but extensions, and "helper" apps, etc. in Notifications as well as Security & Privacy, and I am sure other preference panes I haven't discovered — YET. It seems more like iOS Settings in that regard.

Per your previous discussion on System Preferences and Helper Apps / Extensions, I noted some initial issues with my 1Password7 extension beach-balling until a shut-down & restart AFTER the upgrade restart.....those seem to have cleared up successfully.

The other issue that I experienced was with the Kensington Trackball Works pref-pane.....v1.4 was released recently to contend with the Apple sandbox and security changes in MacOS 10.13, but fails to identify itself to the MacOS 10.14 Mojave Security PrefPane correctly in order to be activated. A call to Kensington support reveals that there is a broken component in the SDK used for that release and their software team is working on a fix....estimating early October around the 6th or so.

Maybe I've just plain got weird email notification karma. frown

MailBar's (Russian) devs took the money and ran rather than update it for Sierra.

Herald's developer (who now works for Apple and may no longer maintain his plugin) has responded to my email with...

Quote:
It won’t work on Mojave without some changes unfortunately. I have one person who expressed interest in taking it over, so fingers crossed! 🤞

I bought Mail Mini from the App Store (I HATE having to say that!), because at $1.99 it was far and away my least expensive option, and it includes in its documentation

Quote:
Note: Mail Mini does not currently support the POP protocol, and only notifies you of email messages marked as unread.

which to me says that its POP support is limited to notification of unread email messages...doesn't include its greater IMAP functionality, but there's no apparent way to get it to "see" my POP accounts. (I'm waiting on a response from the dev.)

Mail Satellite, which I'm running at the moment is altogether curious...

It's listed as $15 shareware on MacUpdate (for an earlier version than clicking on "Download" delivers), but it's NOT listed on its dev's website, nor do I see any way to pay for it. (I see ~/.../Mail Satellite.app/Contents/Resources/THPurchasedInfoWindowController.nib, but if it's what it sounds like, its purpose has yet to be revealed. I wonder if there's an undisclosed trial period after which it will jump out of the woodwork and say "Boo!" just when I've decided that it's purposeless?)

One more Mojave peculiarity...

I run an app called NoSleep whose menu bar icon was initially black when it was off and blue when it was turned on.

A few OS versions back the "on" blue changed to grey while the "off" black remained as it was, and now in Mojave, the blue has morphed into a blank space while the black again remains as it was.

crazy confused

One down!

My 32 bit Canon printer ain't even worth 2 bits in Mojave.

No warning at all. It wouldn't run so I uninstalled it and got the bad news when I tried to reinstall. (I just checked Canon's website and there's not only no 64 bit driver, they don't even offer the 32 bit version any more. Strange.)

Good thing I saved a High Sierra installation.

See if Gutenprint has a driver that works for you.

If I may impose, Jon, I can't even figure out how to install Gutenprint, so would you mind checking Canon imageCLASS LBP6000 for me? (I'm not at all hopeful.)

Thanks.

Thanks, Jon, but no luck.

The latest version available is the 32 bit version that doesn't work in Mojave.

Canon has apparently discontinued support for the printer. Oh, well. frown

Look here for Gutenprint downloads then look a little further down the page for Printer Drivers. You have to look carefully at the lists of supported printers as the Gutenprint (formerly GIMP Print) drivers are often backward or alternately compatible with any number of different models.
I used to use Gutenprint in preference to OEM drivers because they were better and often supported features not supported in the OEM drivers.

32 bit drivers will still work in Mojave (I have three or four I am using because the vendor has not yet updated their MacOS driver to 64 bit) but they are still being built and the vendor will have to update before MacOS 10.15 Gutenprint is very actively supported so I am confident that if it isn't 64 bit now, it will be in time for MacOS 10.15.

No luck, but thanks for trying.

My printer has been discontinued, the last time Canon updated its driver they were aware of the demise of 32 bit and chose not to acknowledge it, and Gutenprint hasn't got an answer.

So, be it 32 bit or something altogether different, I guess I'll just have to boot into High Sierra to print until I get a new printer.

Artie: I don't know if you are interested, but take a look at Epson weekly specials. I use Epson because it prints superlative photos, but mine also makes excellent text prints. Worth a look...

I've had very good luck with refurbished Brother laser printers on woot. I got a B&W a few years back, and it worked great - no ink carts or jet modules to mess with. Picked up a color last year and also works fabulous. So glad to be rid of those priced-higher-than-gold ink carts!

Laserjets work especially well for users like me that don't print very often. That toner has a shelf life measured in decades, unlike inkjet that must be used weekly. The toner mine came with may last the lifetime of the printer!

Thanks for the heads-up, Jon.

Epson printers - and most of the others, too, in fact - don't work for me because their footprint is too big for the top of my stereo where my printer lives.

My needs are minimal, mostly shipping labels these days, and the current incarnation of the basic Canon I've now got will more than suffice. And as V1 said, the introductory (900 page, whatever a page happens to be) cartridge will probably outlast the machine (as has been the case with my current Canon).

My Canon iP110 will fit handily into one compartment of my backpack, has excellent color and B&W, and was relatively inexpensive to purchase. On the downside, the ink cartridges are not large but that means they are used up before they have time to dry out and it is not the fastest printer especially in high quality mode. But it probably has the best print of any printer I have ever had going back to a modified IBM Selectric typewriter I used with my original Ohio Scientific computer 50 or so years ago. If you are looking for new, I recommend it, especially if space is limited or portability is desired.
