We are just 20 weeks into 2018 and the tragedy at Santa Fe, Texas is the 22nd school shooting this year in the U.S. where someone was hurt or killed. The gun lobby is already out in full force to protect their interests while the politicians are making the ever-predictable “calls for actionâ€.
Following the Parkland, Florida shooting, President Trump met with a group of the students and afterward said: “We cannot imagine the depth of their anguish, but we can pledge the strength of our resolveâ€. He also chastised American lawmakers suggesting they were “petrified of the powerful firearms lobby†and that perhaps he was the one to stand up to them because “They have less power over meâ€, ignoring the fact that he took more than $30 million from the NRA for his election campaign.
Less than two months after his disingenuous promises to America’s youth, Trump was the keynote speaker at the NRA Convention boasting: “Only one candidate in the general election came to speak to you, and that candidate is now the president of the United States, standing before you. You came through for me, and I am going to come through for you.â€
Now, following this most recent mass murder, Trump tried to reverse direction and give the impression that he actually cares about the carnage.
However, Trump's fake sympathy was not lost on a Parkland student, Jaclyn Corin, who responded to his latest trite tweet with: “Our children are being MURDERED and you’re treating this like a game.â€

Let us hope that enough disgusted or frustrated students become old enough to vote in the near future, and then do vote.
On a Mac since 1984. Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

... Less than two months after his ingenuous promises to America’s youth, ... Surely, you meant to say "disingenuous" [= insincere, dishonest, untruthful, false, deceitful, duplicitous, lying, mendacious, hypocritical]. And, yes, I know, don't call you Shirley.

And will enough teenagers come of age AND care to prevent a re-election? Same goes for those who already were old enough to vote, but stayed home on election night the last time? Time will tell, I suppose. P.S. I've never quite followed the reasoning that the solution to the gun "problem" is to have more guns around.

Unfortunately, though, when they're old enough to vote, they're also old enough to buy guns. If only they were bold and intelligent enough to use them to positive advantage ....

Personally I think ingeniously disingenuous may be closer to the mark. Never understimate Herr Trumpness. He has a knack for fooling a lot of the people a lot of the time.

If for nothing else, we've got to give him at least a bit of credit for being perhaps the most accomplished liar of all time. I'm constantly amazed by his audiences being sucked in by the laughably diametric opposite of what he told his preceding audience. I have squandered my resistance For a pocket full of mumbles, such are promises All lies and jests Still a man hears what he wants to hear And disregards the rest
Lie la lie, lie la la la lie lie Lie la lie, lie la la la la lie la la lie (It seems to me that there are more syllables in that chorus than I remember being in the song.)

"Trump's government has failed [eg, in ameliorating the human catastrophe in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria] not only because of indifference and incompetence, although he abounds in both, but because from the start it has been redirected from the service of the public to the aggrandizement of one domineering man and his shameless grasping extended family."
So opines David Frum in his Trumpocracy : The Corruption of the American Republic (p xiii).

"...one domineering man and his shameless grasping extended family." Kinda sounds like Putin and the Russian oligarchs, doesn't it? My read is that Trump idolizes Putin, is insanely jealous of his thievery, and would match it if he could, but in the end, he's just a penny-ante player...nowhere near in the same league on any level.

Keep in mind that Herr Tromp wasn't trained in the skullduggery and vicious subterfuge of the KGB. He only aspires to it. And he's bad at it.

Although, personal thievery ambitions aside, Trump is managing to accomplish one thing that Putin has already achieved, which is to turn his country into a plutocracy.

Putin is to Trump as Hitler was to Mussolini I don't think Hitler owned Mussolini as Putin seems to own Trump.

I don't think Hitler owned Mussolini as Putin seems to own Trump. Probably because they didn't have tiny video cameras back then.

I don't think Hitler owned Mussolini as Putin seems to own Trump. Probably because they didn't have tiny video cameras back then. Either that, or Mussolini was celibate. It's almost funny that in a world in which, since time immemorial, the soldiers have gotten the women and the leaders have gotten the wealth, America goes crazy over leaders who are happy with no more than a woman or two. (Trump, though, out-sleezes the others by being a greedy-pig exception who wants both.)

They just get worse and worse. The treatment of asylum seekers and their children seems to make Nazi treatment relating to the "final solution" (Endlösung) almost benign by comparison, considering that it's emanating from the previously most democratic country in the world and is violating international law and conventions in every direction.
I'm guessing that it's almost too late to save the USA. Before we close the doors and turn off the lights, perhaps one last gesture of rationality would be to provide an appropriate comeuppance much like the Italians meted out to Mussolini at the end of WW II ... although I'd prefer a more Hannibal Lecter approach. {really wishful thinking}
Even PM Justin Trudeau has had the biscuit with Tramp and his cotery of douchebags. Perhaps at the G7 meeting in Québec they could all be unceremoniously dumped into a ravine (and then have the rescue parties search for them in the Rockies).

I'm surprised Justin didn't quote his father Pierre who, when President Nixon called him "an (enter the word for rectal orifice)", replied: "I've been called worse by better people."

There's an old saying that you can be judged by the quality of your enemies. Also, never argue with an idiot. People may not be able to tell the difference.
Lyndon Johnson said it best: "Never get into a pissing contest with a skunk."

I feel the urge to purge and to P on his parade: The Tramp is a petty, petulant, picayune and pathetic putz, in addition to being piss-poor as a president, peculiar and precariously close to mentally imploding (if that hasn't already transpired, possibly prepartum). If only his presidency were to become quietly and quickly posthumous. RIP.

Most presidents have events that boost or hurt their approval, but it seems the current one’s rating is flat as can be. Like a grid lock, and people won’t change their mind either way, no matter what happens.
