I use the contrivance "s/he" whenever she/he is applicable. "They" used as a singular pronoun scorches my slippers, too.

And speaking of pet peeves: Whatever happened to " My friends and I" instead of "Me and my friends?"

I prefer se and hir as replacements for he/she and his/her.

"They" as a singular pronoun sounds like a contrived device that should follow "Ummm...".

Ya, that's a pain to hear but I find something similar even more aggravating....people so afraid to use "me" wrongly that they use "I" in every instance.....even when "me" is correct. Grrrrr.
