The maker of Malwarebytes is reporting that the software updating site, MacUpdate, is unwittingly distributing software that contains a virus designed to use your Mac's CPU to mine for cryptocurrency.

Fortunately the free version of Malwarebytes can detect and remove this virus.

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

Thanks for the heads up. Malwarebytes reported no problems for me. Also, I never download anything directly from MacUpdate. Instead, I either go directly to the developer's site or launch the app and let it update by itself.

I've seen things I suspect of doing that popping up infrequently at random places. I'll visit a website and while the page is up I'll hear my laptop's fans start spinning up. Open activity monitor and find some web process running lots of CPU.

"OH I see what you are doing..." *CLOSE*
