10.13.1 update quirk

I've updated both my laptop and my desktop to the 10.13.1 download from Apple. The laptop (2017 MacBook Air) went perfectly and in About This Mac announces the system as 10.13.1.

However, the desktop (2010 Mac Pro) ran the update, but it didn't seem to "take". I ran it again today. It took a half hour to install and the font libraries have changed from how I had left them (Kurt Lang) but still, when I look at About This Mac or even the Startup Disk preference pane, I only see 10.13.

Anyone else experience this? Thanks.

Interesting. The third time was the charm.

The first two times, I knew the update was out there, but Software Update on my Mac Pro was not seeing it. My MacBook Air updated without problem, so I went to the Apple download site. Twice. It went through the whole half hour update process, but it didn't take.

On the third attempt, Software Update actually acknowledged the update and I let my Mac do the work. Now, About This Mac and Startup Disk see 10.13.1.

So, I ran Disk Utility. Twice. Each time it hung on (I think) checking fsroot tree. I rebooted in Safe Mode and ran Disk Utility again. This time it worked. Rebooted normally and all seems fine now. I've not had a problem like this in years. Made me wonder if my 2010 Mac Pro is reaching the end of its life.

Anyway, I'd still be curious if this was just me, or others have experienced any kind of glitch with the 10.13.1 update.

Cheers.

Lastly, after my previous 10.13 install, I changed my SSD from Apple's file system to Mac OS extended (journaled) so that I could see High Sierra in the Startup Disk preference pane of my Yosemite drive. After the 10.13.1 update, I had reformat my drive again.

Otherwise, everything is working as expected again. All Adobe CS5 products seem to perform well, but all "Quit unexpectedly - would you like to send report to Apple" upon quit.

How are you reinstalling High Sierra on the SSD after you reformat it to HFS+?

If the only reason you are reformatting the drive is so you can see it in the Startup Disk preference pane, both the Yosemite and High Sierra boot images will show up if you do an Option Boot (hold the Option key while performing a "Cold" boot). That would be a lot simpler and might prevent unexpected problems down the road.

Of course Yosemite will not be able to "see" the SSD or anything on it, but vice-versa would work just fine.

Alternatively, if you install High Sierra on an external drive, either SSD or HDD, it will NOT be converted to APFS during the installation.

Only internal SSDs are converted to APFS when High Sierra is installed.

Hi Freelance, I just did the 10.13.1 update today and had a similar experience to yours....first time through, it did NOT install, but would no longer show as available on Software Update until a restart - then it became available as an update option, and this time it took.

I do a CarbonCopy clone from the APFS SSD to a GUID Mac OS extended HDD. Then, I use Disk Utility to erase the SSD, selecting Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Finally, I CarbonCopy clone the backup to the original SSD.

The SSD I use is a 240Mb drive with two equal partitions, one for High Sierra, the other for Snow Leopard. Yosemite is still my main OS, but I like to keep up-to-date for when my Mac Pro packs up and I have to replace it with a new iMac. Then at least I know what to expect when the inevitable change comes.

That's interesting. My Yosemite drive is a SSD mounted on a pci-e card. Sierra sees that as an external drive. So, if I mount the Sierra SSD onto the pci-e card, any updates would not convert the drive to APFS?

Even so, it's probably easier to do the double cloning method than all the hardware changes. If I'm feeling energetic when 10.13.2 comes out, I might give it a try...

Thanks. So it's not just me. I did not have any problem at all with my 2017 MacBook Air and wondered if planned obsolescence was the issue.
