Spotlight update manually? And how to check?

Is it a good idea to force a spotlight update every few months?

And to do that, you just add to privacy and then subtract?

And finally is there a way to verify it's going? I don't see activity monitor reflecting it works.

No need to re-index if there are no problems. Indexing should be a continuous process.

If the GUI method for forcing re-indexing doesn’t seem to work, you might try the Terminal:
Code:
sudo mdutil -E /
where -E is erase and rebuild the index
and / is the path the the boot drive. Use different path for other volumes.

You can check activity by looking for mds, mdimport, mdworker processes.

Clarifying...those two statements directly respond to your questions.

"Check [for] activity" means that seeing one/two/all(?) of those processes active in /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor indicates that Spotlight is doing its thing, but there's no guarantee that you'll see any of them active at any particular time. (I don't think you'll ever see "Spotlight" listed in AM.)
