Can anybody explain if/how Safari SafeBrowsing Service differs from Google's similarly named service?

And in light of the fact that there is a Safari SafeBrowsing Service, do I need to keep Safari > Prefs > Security > Fraudulent sites > Warn.... checked?

The pref periodically turns up a "Google Safe Browsing Service not available...." warning that apparently can't be overcome other than by a PIA restart, so I'd like to disable it if it doesn't leave me at risk.

Thanks.

From what I could readily find, it seems that Safari Safe Browsing uses Google's safe browsing database. Make of this what you will. smirk

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

Thanks, Ira.

You did better searching than I did, and what you've suggested doesn't surprise me.

(I quit Safari at least once a day, so I don't understand why the warning comes up, and I've searched fruitlessly any number of times for a way to dismiss it.)

I just found "On Feb 25, 2017, com.apple.Safari.SafeBrowsing.Service tried to establish a connection to safebrowsing.googleapis.com on port 443 (https). The request was allowed via connection alert." (and a second, similar rule) in Little Snitch, so that's correct.

I'd still love to know why the Safe Browsing Service craps out on me so often; I've got to restart now, after only 1 day.
