Applications crash when printing

I have a MBP late 2012 running 10.12.1. Recently when I attempt to change settings in the print dialogue box, specifically 'print setting' the application crashes. This happens when trying to print from Word (2008) Photoshop Elements 10, and iPhoto 9.6.
I can print but I can't change the print settings without the crash happening.
This also happens on my MBP late 2010 that is running 10.11.6
However it doesn't seem to effect TextEdit or Preview. Might it be because of the age of these slightly older applications?
Any suggestions welcomed.
Thanks

Which printer are you using? Have you tried resetting the printing system? Are there any updated drivers available from the printer manufacturer?

I had a similar problem (although I only have one computer). The culprit was a corrupted printer preset. I deleted that preset and created a new one to replace it. That solved the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion, the driver did need updating, I uninstalled all the old stuff, installed the new one, but the problem persists!

Two questions:

1. As I asked before, which printer are you using? Someone may have experience with it and be able to give an answer.

2. Did you actually reset the printing system? The procedure can be found here

Hi, sorry for my imprecise reply.
Yes I have reset the printing system and the printer is a Brother DCP J4120DW
Still no joy.

Before upgrading to my current MBP, I was using a MacBook Pro i7 (Mid 2010), which had 8GB RAM, and I had the latest macOS Sierra (I believe 10.12.3) installed and running smoothly. ...I would suggest you update both of your MBPs to 10.12.4 (use the Combo Update ) to see if that corrects the issue. (There are also security reasons to be running 10.12.4.) Your oldest MBP should run reliably with the current Sierra.

(You may need to be careful when  upgrades macOS to whatever follows Sierra, say 12.13. FWIW, I've believed that after 7 years in use, an older Mac gets behind the hardware curve and, it's best to forego, at some point, upgrading the OS. - This doesn't invalidate using the older Mac, just installing newest macOS. ...If a newer OS has attractive features, then, it's time to upgrade to a new Mac.)

I also see your using iPhoto, when current macOS uses Photos. Others in the forum, might advise whether iPhoto might have issues when printing. Moreover, you should check whether Word 2008 & Elements 10 have compatibility issues. (I don't know.)

…slightly older applications⁉︎ Word 2008 is 8 years old, Elements 10 is 5, and iPhoto is officially obsolete and no longer supported. In todays world those are not slightly older they are dodderingly old and grey antiques. TextEdit and Preview on the other hand are part of MacOS and are by that measure only a few months old.

I have the 2017 version of MoneyDance, an application I have used and loved for over 15 years, and it hard hangs every time I attempt to print in MacOS 10.12.4, I reported the problem to Apple and the application developer at the beginning of the 10.12.4 beta but the developer chose to ignore my report. Now that 10.12.4 is in full release, no one who has updated to 10.12.4 can print. I suspect the failure is related to a change in the print API (Application Program Interface) and that could be what is happening to you.

Since Photos is also part of MacOS you should have an up to date copy on your system. Open it and import your iPhoto Library, Photos should offer to do that automatically. Then you can try printing from there. If that works, it would at least suggest antique applications might also be a least a part of the problem with Word 2008 and Elements 10.

If that turns out to be the problem you have two choices…
  1. Downgrade to an earlier version of MacOS — not easy to do and you would be giving up a measure of security
  2. Replacing Word 2008 and Elements 10 either with their current versions or other applications.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?
