OS 10.6.8
I inadvertently added all of my iphoto folders to the system prefs sidebar and I cannot find a way to remove some of them. The plus sign is always highlighted but the minus sign is always greyed out. How do I get the minus sign to become highlighted?

You mean the sidebar in the System Prefs > Desktop & Screen Saver > Desktop tab.
Sorry, no idea.
(In Sierra, I just created and added an empty folder, and the minus sign became active as respects it.)

If Artie is correct in his assumption as to where your additions took place, this only increases your option for the background Desktop image. "iPhotos" is always there by default so you have access to images in your library that you may want to use as a Desktop image. You can't remove that folder from the sidebar.

Ira got me thinking... Did those folders you added take on iPhoto icons or have they got generic folder icons?
Hmmm... I wonder if this issue is similar to the one I ran into trying to get rid of a folder of photos I had synced onto my iPhone.
Try creating new, differently named folders in iPhoto and emptying the contents of the folders that appear in your sidebar into them; then try to add the identically named empty folders to your sidebar and see what happens.

I used my backup and then they were gone. However, if you click the + first and then select what ever from iphoto, the - sign is highlighted which means of course that you can remove a folder or your single selection. I must have got them into the sidebar improperly as my son pointed out. I tried it out so now I know. So to import all or any pics, you must click the + first and then a window appears giving you your options. Thanks for your time fellows.
