OS 10.6.8 After opening apps, docs, etc, there is ? mark to the right of the search window. How do I remove it? And how did it get there?

Does it do or tell you anything if you click on it or hover over it?

It says "The item can't be found" when I click the ? mark.

What the item is I don't know.
