Some more good advice ...

Here Is How to Fend Off a Hijacking of Home Devices

I'd choose this option:
"... go the safest route and opt out of having these devices at all. That was the method chosen by Mr Tien, the lawyer for the Electronic Frontier Foundation ...."

I'm with you, Grelber. Of course, being retired, I'm home almost all the time so any of the "smart" options would be stupid.

Me too.

And for that reason, when a while back my local gas company was hawking a rebate for a 'smart' thermostat, I called to ask them to send me same since I was the 'smart' one (despite being in 'retardment') who could reliably adjust my own thermostat. They declined to do so.

Speaking of thermostats, I refuse to get a smart thermostat. In fact, I leave mine at 68 degrees all the time. To my way of thinking, constantly varying the settings leads to unwanted expansion and contraction of house structures, which can't be a good idea. Also, if I put the temperature down for several hours, I think that the fuel used to heat the house back up will be more than would be used just for maintenance.

My 2¢.

I do pretty much the same thing ...
68°F/20°C during the day, but I drop it to 64°F/18°C overnight.
Cooler sleeping generally makes for better sleeping ... unless you have to fight with a spouse who would prefer temps upward of 72°F/22°C. tongue
