Thanks, here it is, the Akamai, (which is red), I have no idea what that is, and cannot find it in apps or preferences. Ok just found it in search, it seems to be a system pref, Oh preference pane think I can delete it.

Was able to to search the app folder and delete.

RE: Etrecheck results

Yes you can post them here for help understanding what they mean, but all that is really needed is the items in red.

Trouble Shooting Procedure

To diagnose a problem you must be able to associate a specific action with an identifiable outcome. There may be other tasks besides drag thing, steer mouse, application wizard, and dropbox that are also quiting but do not appear on the Dock. So for the moment those apps are your pass/fail flags. When you deactivated all of them you had no way to tell if your experiment passed of failed. Reactivating them simply restored the previous system state you already knew was failing. So in essence you have learned almost nothing.

To completely test the possibility that an app is causing these four and possibly other apps you are not seeing to quit it would be necessary to systematically remove all startup items, all Launch Daemons, and all Launch Agents in your user library. The easiest ones to start with would be your startup items — and not just the ones you know are quitting. But if you remove them all at one time there is no way to know the problem was fixed, because you have removed all your pass/fail flags.

The four failing apps are as good a place as any to start and I would suggest starting with one of your flag apps — my personal choice would be DragThing as it interacts with the Dock. To be completely and thoroughly methodical I would
  1. Verify the version of the app
  2. Check with the developer (not a third party bundler) to verify the version is the most recent compatible with your OS.
    1. if it is not the most recent compatible version, download and install the correct version (from the developer's website if at all possible) then proceed to step 4
    2. if it is the most current compatible version go to step 3
  3. Deactivate/uninstall the app
  4. Reboot and run the system for at least a few days or until the flag app(s) quit unexpectedly.
  5. IF the flag app(s) do NOT quit, go to Step 6 ELSE you have identified the culprit and you can…
    1. Contact the developer and report the problem (I would also report it to Apple)
    2. Replace it with another app that provides similar functionality
    3. Discard the app and live without it
    4. Exit the troubleshooting process.
  6. Strike the app you are testing off of the list of suspects, restore the system to its state before the test started and go to step 1
NOTE: if nothing is found in the Startup Items go to Launch Deamons and Launch Agents. Obviously this can take a good while unless the failures happen quickly and even then it can take days. I wish I could say this is guaranteed to find your problem, but that would be untrue. It will however find the problem if the initial assumption that the problem is in a third party app.

If you are running MacOS 10.12 (Sierra)
At the time of this post MacOS 10.12.2 is apparently in the final testing stages and contains among other things some bug fixes. Given this entire process could be very time consuming, you may want to postpone troubleshooting until after you have installed and tried MacOS 10.12.2.

Thanks Joe, will proceed.

This was what was in red:

User Launch Agents: ⓘ
[failed] com.akamai.client.plist (2010-10-28) [Support] - /Applications/Akamai/loader.pl: Executable not found!
[failed] com.akamai.single-user-client.plist (2013-09-07) [Support] - ~/Applications/Akamai/netsession_mac: Executable not found!

I have no idea on this: all Launch Daemons, and all Launch Agents in your user library, but will ask if exhaust the easy stuff.

Probably wont have time to test this well until Jan, but did notice again this morning everything is gone after a long sleep of the laptop. Though I cannot recreate that at will, just sleeping for a few minutes, there is that pattern of long sleeps, everything is gone.

But I swear it happens during day too ( while computer is just on all day)

Executable not found means you have an orphan Launch Agents installed on your system. This particular one is usually installed as part of Adobe Download Manager. This article may be helpful in getting rid of the whole thing. (Another more reason, besides leasing/rental fees, I have been finding replacements for Adobe apps.)

Thanks Joe, yes, Adobe, is a pita, but I'm tied down being a photographer and knowing PS, and Lightroom, and Bridge well....

I did the terminal command the article recommends but got;

-bash: /Applications/Akamai/admintool: No such file or directory
Macintosh-3:~

Etre still shows it as an app
[failed] com.akamai.client.plist (2010-10-28) [Support] - /Applications/Akamai/loader.pl: Executable not found!
[failed] com.akamai.single-user-client.plist (2013-09-07) [Support] - ~/Applications/Akamai/netsession_mac: Executable not found!

I did find the plist and deleted them.

But I can't find the app anywhere, not even with spotlight.

The executables that weren't found (as per red print) are components of the app, so if they're not on your Mac, the app, itself, is not on your Mac.

Good news deleting the plist was enough and there are no red marks now in Etre Check. I will be tied up and might not be able to trouble shoot fully until Jan, so stay tuned!

Etre check is nice. When did this come out, and has it become the new cool Mac tool?

The plists were hiccuping because they couldn't find the executable, so now that you've deleted them there's nothing for EtreCheck to show...either in red or otherwise.

I've been aware of EtreCheck for probably two years, but I don't know when it first turned up.

It has carved itself a niche, but it's not a tool, i.e. it doesn't do anything; it's merely a window into your Mac and OS. Much of the info it presents is available elsewhere on your Mac and/or isn't generally important, but it is useful for uncovering some situations...as you've just learned.

If you spend much time on the Apple OS X and MacOS discussions I think you will find Etrecheck is far and above the most often used troubleshooting tool there. It has evolved significantly since its inception and while it neither fixes or even directly diagnoses any problems it provides a plethora of information for even a moderately informed user to spot potential problems.

Because of my predilection for running beta software I am always adding, deleting, updating and upgrading things on my computer. In spite of my best efforts at good computer housekeeping detritus does collect. I use Entrecheck prophylactically and I am frequently surprised at things it finds.
