I wonder if they will take a more serious look at the EC if one or more (or possibly, quite a few, though unlikely enough to matter) cast their vote contrary to their state's opinion. While it's difficult to say whether or not having ditched the EC would have changed the results of past elections (due to how it would affect the way candidates ran their campaign) I still think it would produce a better outcome, or at least a less contentious one. If you lose the popular vote, you really have no one to blame but yourself.

Make that 628 to go. A second Texas Elector has announced he cannot in good conscience vote for Trump.

As for the institution of the Electoral College, with ~70% of the U.S. population living within 50 miles of an ocean and most of that ~70% on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, the Electoral College and the Senate are the only mechanisms that give the rest of the nation any traction in our nation's governance.

A major factor in the success of this nation of great distances and sometimes wildly disparate cultures, customs, religions, and opinions are the provisions in the Constitution protecting the minority from the tyranny of the majority. I, for one, am stringently opposed to any change that might reduce those protections. A two legged stool, the Electoral College and the Senate, requires careful attention and determined intention to keep upright. Take away the Electoral College and the stool is almost guaranteed to fall with even the tiniest shove.

¡¿Qué?! Where did that number come from? There are only 538 Electoral College voters.

I just had a bit of an existential moment... the original purposes of the electoral college were to help streamline the election process and also as a trapdoor in case the village idiots voted for someone really stupid, they could catch and fix it.

Well... for as much as we hate the electoral college... aren't we flirting with activating the 2nd contingency right now? How ironic, that one of the very reasons the college exists may turn out to be its undoing? If they pull it off, I seriously can't imagine it surviving to 2020.

It looks like Trump accepts global warming when it threatens his financial interests. Green delight as Trump's Irish wall plans withdrawn

When the man about to become the most powerful person in the world cannot resist beating up a local union president (for telling the truth), one has to wonder about the Republicans' hope that they'll keep Trump in check once he's in office.

Volker Ullrich, a German historian and journalist for the Hamburg broadsheet Die Zeit, wrote about Hitler: “His conservative allies in government assumed they could tame or ‘civilise’ him – that once he became chancellor he’d become vernünftig (meaning sensible, reasonable). Very quickly it became clear that was an illusion.”

Good luck, GOP.

There's an old parable about "having a tiger by the tail"... one is terrified to keep holding on, but more terrified by what will happen should they let go.

I don't think any of them have any illusion of "control" when it comes to Trump. If anything, they're going to have a harder time working with him than any Democrat.

I agree. With apologies to William Shakespeare, I'd say it's going to be: "The Taming of the Screwball."

It will be interesting to see where it goes, although the thing mystifying me most is the emphasis placed on whether or not Putin was trying to get Trump elected. It seems the bigger issue is that your country was attacked by a foreign power - it may have been a cyber attack but it was an attack nonetheless.

That fact alone should have everyone, especially the President-elect, outraged and anxious to get to the bottom of it. The attack's objective may have had nothing to do with electing Trump. It may have had a much wider objective - determining the viability of disrupting your other important institutions.

It's noteworthy that the Republicans were hacked also, but only emails from the Democrats were leaked.

Wow. Stuff like this you can't even make up...

"Trump names Exxon chief as secretary of state"

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/12/tr...3112341375.html

He's going to have the entire government run by companies by end of his first year....

(at least he didn't nominate him to head the EPA, I suppose that's something?)

And that's what makes me now wonder about Russia's intention with the hacking. They didn't need to hack the Republicans to get anti-Hillary smear material as they got plenty from going into the Democrat Party's mail. And, if there was any reason they might want to smear Trump, a hack wasn't necessary. The Democrats were already doing a good enough job. However a Republican headquarters hack might yield other important information about Republican Party thinking.

So, were the two hacking events just testing to see how far they could go in light of a broader goal….disrupting important American institutions? I'm neither a conspiracy theorist nor an expert in geo-political matters but it seems to me that a person such as Putin likely has much longer-range goals than affecting the election outcome.

Rats! And double rats! Given the outcome, 'twould appear that the sum of the IQs of the electors doesn't quite reach 3 digits. {sigh}

Mayhap now that the grander electorate has been made aware of the Electoral College there might be a groundswell of popular insistence that the institution be abolished — especially given the original/underlying basis for the institution in the Constitution.

Bottom line (from north of the 49th): Meh.

I think a lot of the electors got it right, but there just weren't enough of them. However, they now appear on Trump's Twitter threads. I don't use Twitter but got a look at one of Trump's threads on-line and concluded Trump must be nutty to keep tweeting…unless he's a bit masochistic and likes abuse.

Here's what Trump tweeted:

Bill Clinton stated that I called him after the election. Wrong, he called me (with a very nice congratulations). He "doesn't know much" …

And here's what the first page of responses contained:

• Donald, your favorability is the worst in the NBC/WSJ poll's history for a president-elect.

• so petty

• why would you care about such a small distinction? Good god you're petty

• what? Are you 6?

• you are a toddler

• oh Jesus christ NO ONE CARES. GROW UP YOU FAT OLD BABY MAN.

• Right, because this petty #$!& is what's important. It's not like you're the President-elect who should be above that.

• I'm sorry you are such a sore winner, but don't drag Bill Clinton into your drama. Some people are more mature than this.

• You can say a lot of things but one glaring fact will always haunt you: you aren't smart. You don't have the "best words."

• Can you be the bigger man for once? Is that even within your abilities? Can you just be a gracious person and rise above?

• One final thing. You will never be Bill Clinton. You'll never preside over such economic expansion. You are a big mistake.
