Very odd problem, so my expectations on solving this are low!

On my laptop (not desktop), my log in items are disappearing, after they are up.

In other words, after reboots, they are there, and then during course of the day, they seem to vanish. Odd thing so I'm baffled on this. (drag thing, steer mouse, application wizard, dropbox)

I think you're talking about menu bar icons, and if so, do their associated apps quit when they disappear?

thanks Artie, some are menu items, like dropbox and Atext, but other like Drag Thing, application Wizard, Steer Mouse, just vanish during, very bizarre. All come back fine on a reboot though.

OK, the apps are quitting, and it sounds like your login items are the only ones affected.

For lack of any better ideas, try launching /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and running First Aid on your boot volume.

Take a look at the logs in the Console App and see if anything is showing up there regarding the disappearing apps. Any crash or unusual exit should be reported there. Console logs don't always work the same way in Sierra as in previous OS X versions and it may take some hunting to find the entries and they can be difficult for anyone but a developer to fully understand, but they can be helpful in a case like yours.

If you find something and need help post 10 or 12 lines either side of the entry back here and someone should be able to help figure it out.

My suggestion would be to do a copy of the log and past it into a post on this forum

Thanks Joe, well, now has gone away (temporary), and can't find in console as do big, what part to copy/ paste....

Is there a good easy place that does what tiny pic used to do easily before they make us jump 20 hoops?

Very tough issue as you have to spot when the intermittant issue start. I think this screenshot. png may have something interesting in it.

Ok find the spot, but not 100% this is the goods but it's a start:

Is there a good easy place that does what tiny pic used to do easily before they make us jump 20 hoops?

I use FreeImageHosting, but I've never used TinyPic, so I'm not sure if it's the same thing.

1. Upload your screenshot to FreeImageHosting.net.

2. FIH will return a long URL that will look like this: <a href="http://www.freeimagehosting.net/commercial-photography/texas/houston/"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/U4bjF9h.png" alt="Houston commercial photography"></a>

3. From that URL, extract and post only the blue portion. (Leave out the quotes.)

4. Post your link by utilizing the "Create a link to a webpage" icon...second from the left, above.

ok just to make sure I am understanding this correctly, your login items are launching at login, but are quitting unexpectedly. They aren't being removed from your login items list though, so are relaunching the next time you log in, but will just unexpectedly quit again shorttly after login?

Do the apps quit with 100% reliability, or do they only sometimes quit? Do all of them quit or just some? (the same ones every time?) Do you know if they quit at the same time?

What happens if you remove them from your login items, reboot, login, and launch the items manually? Do they still eventually quit on their own? How long does it take for them to quit usually?

Are you able to test with another account to see if the same problem happens for other users also?

Is it possible that the apps continue to run until you do something specific, like launch a specific application, put the computer to sleep, let the screensaver come up, have a calendar alarm come up, etc?

Thanks Virtual, great post. I did verify/ repair HD and it seemed ok. So intermittent, have not been able to spot when or why this happens, but I'll try to keep an eye.

The laptop goes to sleep and awakes every morning, but I think usually those log in items are there in morning. They are always there consistently after reboots and shut down, relaunch. So still perplexing. Do you think just deleting and adding them back could solve it?

Troubleshooting 101
  1. The first step in troubleshooting a problem is to narrow the solution space. In other words eliminating places where the problem might originate. I had hoped the logs might provide some clues, but I don't see anything in the log you submitted.
  2. A standard next step would be to boot from another account on your computer, launch all the disappearing apps and see if the problem persists. This is a lot harder to do accurately when there are multiple apps involved, so you might proceed directly to the next troubleshooting step.
  3. Eliminate the suspects
    1. One by one deactivate or even uninstall the apps involved: drag thing, steer mouse, application wizard, and dropbox. Since Drag Thing interacts with the Dock it would seem to be a logical prime suspect and I would start there.
    2. With the prime suspect deactivated or uninstalled, see if the the others disappear from the Dock. With an intermittent problem you want to run long enough to guarantee the problem would appear if present.
    3. If the problem is still appearing, remove the prime suspect from the list of suspects and reactivate/reinstall it.
    4. Choose another prime suspect, go back to step 3.a., and repeat the process.
  4. If that doesn't solve the problem then we will have to look even deeper.
NOTE: Some apps can leave unexpected and potentially problematic helper apps behind and running even when the parent has not been started or is deactivated. The Activity Monitor task list may help identify and deactivate these unexpected helpers.

SIDEBAR: Apple's insistence that apps sold through the App Store must be sandboxed has caused some developers no small amount of blood sweat and tears to implement which unsurprisingly has resulted in some complaints. But sandboxing makes one app interfering with the operation of another app if not impossible then at least highly unlikely. None of the four apps listed are available through the App Store and I would venture that none of them are sandboxed.

Great info Joe, will try. So you think it's the fault of one app toppling the others?

Maybe first delete all from startup items and re-add there first as Virtual suggested?

Put it this way, I think it is a possibility worth checking out. I also think it is a possibility that you have an out of date or semi-compatible app, which may be initiated by Startup Items, a Launch Daemon, or Launch Agent.

It is always tempting to use a "shotgun" approach but then you never know what the actual problem was and that leaves you in danger of unwittingly recreating it. As a Software Design Engineer, I was always taught that troubleshooting "best practices" all say try one fix at a time and if that does not solve the problem restore the previous state and try the next. It may take a little — okay with an intermittent error possibly a lot longer — but it is safer in the long run.

Thanks Joe, so you recommend pulling out and quiting one app at a time off the laptop? Even dropbox, hardware growler, makes sense. I'll start with Dragthing. I also have Synkmark up all the time with sync my bookmarks, and that app has a lot of chaos always, but not a log in item.

The fact that it's only kevs's login items that are affected leaves me scratching my head and wondering if maybe /Users/[kevs]/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginitems.plist is somehow hiccuping and bringing those apps down.

Think trashing the plist is worth the effort?

I think it is a stretch to think the login items plist is a cause of this particular problem. But stranger things have happened. But again I urge trying one thing at a time and not throwing the whole kitchen sink at the issue at once.

I agree on all counts, but this wouldn't be "throwing the whole kitchen sink at the issue at once" as opposed to kevs's deleting and restoring all his login items in one shot, which would.

I dunno, it just seems strange that it's only login items that are affected; some daemon, maybe? It may be worth kevs's while to run EtreCheck.

Thanks Artie/ Joe. Ok I'll run Etre check. Just heard of that app a year ago.

But Joe, If did trash that preference, and did delete and re-add log in item, either it work and I'd be done, or it would not work and then I can do the more tedious one by one approach, right?

Right on both accounts. I was going to suggest Etrecheck as well, but I didn't want to come in with a laundry list of different things.

Etre looks ok, but had a couple of red marks, I could post here, should I?

I deleted that log in preference and deleted all log in items and re added, but this morning, after waking up from sleep, the problem is still there!

Should I should just slowly, delete one thing at a time of all log ins one by one? I wonder why disppeard after sleep, but again, I have noticed it happen in middle of day, I think..
