Why is my MacBook Pro running slow?

Hello,

I recently update to Sierra but it runs very slow from startup. The Mac takes too much time when the Apple logo appears, and before selecting my user the mouse is very slow and the keyboard too, every action takes too much time. I am trying to figure out the problem, followed some official guides but I could not find the problem yet. I removed the startup user items, created another user account, but I think this is not user related since the problem comes from startup. Also I restart the SMC and first aid option is ok but none of this solutions seems to work for me.

I wrote all this in safe mode and I can not reproduce the error. Could this be a hardware issue?

This is a MacBook Pro A1286 i7,

Thanks in advance.

Hi, and welcome to FineTunedMac. smile

I recently reverted from Sierra to El Capitan because of unbearable slowness in a few areas.

Restarting/shutting down took close to a minute from command to chime, and all Finder functionality was slow, as were switching Safari tabs and keyboard reaction time...at the least. (I don't pay anywhere near full attention when I'm frustrated.)

I reinstalled more than once and ran into the same issues each time, and while rerunning the macOS 10.12.1 updater was a fix, it was only a temporary one.

All in all, I'll guess that we ran into similar brick walls, but rather than beat my brains out fighting City Hall - I wasn't overwhelmed by what I saw of Sierra, anyhow. - I decided to wait for a few more point updates and try again.

Sorry I couldn't be very helpful. frown

How much RAM is installed? If you have too little, that could account for the slowness.

Out of curiosity, w4rao, do you delocalize (as I do)?

Hey, thank you and everyone for trying to help, it is supprising to me how people from the internet can help you.

A bit history:

I am a new Mac user, I bought this used mac a few days ago, they upgrade to Sierra but the machine was not used so they did not give with this. So I think that downgrading could be a temporary fix for me too.

I did not delocalize it yet (Whatever this means, I'm gonna search it now on the internet and will come here with the results hehe)

This is the report from a software called EtreCheck.

A friend has a similar model (same year but 13-inch) and it, too, is slow with Sierra (and it was with El Capitan as well). Hers has a 5400 rpm hard drive and, if you have one also, that could be the bottleneck. 7200 rpm drives are considerably faster. From your EtreCheck post, I don't see any mention of its speed, unless I missed something.

It would appear that the disk may be 5400 rpm.

"Delocalization" is when you remove languages you don't use from your installation. (By way of example, there are more than a hundred languages other than English in Sierra.)

I've always done it with no apparent repercussions, but I've been wondering if the procedure bit me this time.

Etrecheck does not perform any benchmark or speed tests, but it is a good diagnostic tool in today's complex systems. I am wondering why the formatting should be different between the two Etrecheck runs or why the first one (run in normal mode?) is truncated and significant information left out. I also notice the Kernel Extensions report is missing in both listings, it may be you have no kernel extensions, but it would be a very rare system that had none. Whether they are loaded or not EtreCheck identifies the ones present and flags those that are not loaded. The two reports should be pretty much identical with the Safe mode report showing more kernel extensions as (Not Loaded). Try running it again and see if you do not come up with near duplicate listings with the Safe Mode version indicating LaunchAgents and/or LaunchDaemons that are not loading. The missing information and inconsistencies between the two Etrecheck reports makes it difficult to identify any reason for significant differences in performance between normal and Safe mode operation.

Even with the report inconsistencies Etrecheck reveals two notable hardware issues directly related to system speed, Jon has already mentioned the 5400 rpm disk drive and fortunately it can be upgraded. A 240GB SSD runs around $120 and with careful management and the use of iCloud and new iCloud features in Sierra might be enough enough disk capacity. A 480GB SSD runs in the $210 neighborhood. There is no question upgrading to an SSD would make a very noticeable improvement in the tasks you have noted. The other speed limiter is the 2 GHz quad core i7. I am a big fan of the quad core i7 processors but 2 GHz is near the bottom of the i7 food chain and unfortunately it is not upgradeable.

Your MBP shipped with either OS X 10.6.6 or 7, which was released on discs. (You need to read Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery, particularly the part about "updated EFI Firmware ROM", before you install your new SSD.)

I suspect that rather than doing an Internet Recovery (which is available only when you haven't got a recovery partition, i.e. when you've either erased your drive or installed a new one) you're just reinstalling via your recovery partition, which will give you the most recent version of OS X/macOS that's been installed on your MBP, i.e. Sierra.

Whomever sold you your MBP should have included the original discs with which it came. From 10.6.6/7, you'd have to update to 10.6.8 to get App Store functionality, and from there, you might be able to get versions of OS X/macOS other than Sierra. If you haven't got the discs, I strongly suggest that you contact the original owner and try to get them. (The only other way for you to get any OS other than Sierra may be to buy a set of Snow Leopard install discs, and even in that case, you still may not be able to legally get anything other than Sierra).

Good luck! smile

(If this was confusing [writing it certainly confused the hell out of me], by all means let me know, and I'll go to all lengths to clarify.)

I will ask him for the discs, I did not read you at time and perfomed an unsuceful internet recovery, erasing the disk.. confused

When it tries to install the OS, shows this error:

Mac OSX can't be installed on the disk OS, because a recovery system can't be created. Visit www.apple.com/support/no-recovery to learn more." What can I do? I did not find anything on that link

I don't know what happend, I followed this guide https://support.apple.com/es-la/HT204904

I am trying to do it again, I think I'm giving back this machine, I have had a really bad experience with this.

My best guess is that your MBP was never updated for Internet recovery, and once you erased the disc you no longer had the recovery partition that came with Sierra, so you had neither of the two tools that would have enabled you to reinstall...something.

It looks to me like your only completely legal hope now is to get hold of a set of Snow Leopard discs.

For many years, at both FTM and our predecessor site, MacFixIt, we've made it a mantra that you should NEVER sell a Mac without including its install discs in the deal nor should you EVER buy one that doesn't come with them.

Where you go from here is your decision that depends on your judgement and circumstances, but be aware that no matter what happens, all is NOT lost.

Edit: I suggest that you return the MBP if the seller doesn't have the install discs.

That was good advice then and still good advice if you are buying older Macs. However, it should be noted that Macs manufactured since roughly mid 2012 do not ship with an install CD/DVD and in fact many those Macs do not even have an optical disc drive.

Or a trip to the Genius Desk at the nearest Apple Store, tell them what has happened and ask that they install the latest compatible version of OS X/MacOS, which they will do, or at least the local Apple Store here will, even on Macs that have officially been designated as obsolete.

Thanks for updating my comment. It's still pertinent for w4rao (and anybody else interested in an older Mac), though, who just bought a 2011 MBP and is liable to buy another one.

I was aware that Apple Stores do complimentary installs of OS X/macOS for people who don't have access to broadband, but I wasn't aware that they might accommodate people in w4rao's situation. Thanks for pointing out the possibility. (Reflecting on it, though, it seems like they'd be more likely to advise w4rao to buy Snowy install discs from the Apple Store than to be accommodating.)

My nearest Apple Store often bends over backward to be accommodating to their customers. An elderly, and somewhat challenged friend took her Mac mini to the local Genius Desk a couple of weeks ago. It had gotten completely messed up with malware (I asked how she did that and the best I could figure out she worked hard at it). Two Geniuses spent at least two hours and several phone calls to higher level tech support cleansing the detritus from her system, and in the end installed the most advanced OS her Mac mini is capable of, all at no charge. That Mac was not only well out of Warranty and Apple Care, it is officially an obsolete model no longer eligible for support.

That is the level of customer support I have come to expect from Apple. That is totally in line with their recently revamped Apple Retail Credo

I think they really mean it.

Nice story; certainly over-the-top customer service! smile

I've never seen the Apple Retail Credo before, but it's quite a statement!

And I agree with you that they apparently reeeally do mean it.

Hi guys, I have some news.

I tried to reinstall the system with the internet recovery option and for my surprise it worked, and the system is installed. I think that the previous issue could had be an internet problem.

The bad news are that when I open for example a youtube video, the kernel task takes 500% of CPU usage and it never goes to normal till I restart the machine. I'm thinking that this is a hardware issue since this is a fresh installation of Mac OS X Lion and these components are made to work with this.

I am going to ask for a full refund because the guy that sold it said that the machine was working without problems but I don't know if he is going to agree. If he accept I think I am going to buy a brand new Mac because I am not so expertise with this and don't want to have more headaches. I am so anxious to try these computers.

I will come with more..

I thought Internet Recovery would give you the version of OS X with which your MBP shipped, but yours - Early 2011 per EtreCheck - shipped with either 10.6.6 or .7 and you got 10.7.x.

Hmmm... Perhaps Lion is the earliest version of OS X that IR offers? It was, after all, the first version with IR capability.

Since you've now got /Applications/App Store capability it may be worth your while to try whichever upgrade it will give you (particularly if your seller is recalcitrant).

Good luck in any case!

Actually, it isn't surprising that 10.6 isn't available via internet recovery. That version only exists on DVD, at least AFIK. 10.7 is the earliest version that wasn't available on DVD.
