In the applications folder, in the desktop dock, how do I arrange the images so they are in alphabetical order no matter whether they are the icon of the application or a folder with the the application inside.

It used to be that way but now I have all the icons in alphabetical order, followed by all the folders in alphabetical order.

I don't know if I accidentally executed a keystroke that caused the new arrangement but I'd sure be happier to get to a single alphabetical sort.

Edit: As Rosanna Rosannadanna used to say: "Never mind". Right-clicking on the folder gave me sort options. "By name" got what I wanted.

I have the arrangement you want and it may also be the default mode of Column View in Finder windows. It wasn't clear from your post which mode you were in.

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

In Finder windows I always use the Column View.
