#38159 - 01/07/16 08:04 PM What internet speed test do you use?

I thought the Speakeasy site was the gold standard. And when things are slow it says 2,3,4, mbps instead of the 22 I should be getting.

But I wrote ATT and tried their site and it's 22 when speakeasy says it's 2.

And then I googled (internet speed test), and tested five other sites and they concurred with ATT's site.

I can't evaluate the various speed tests but I use Time Warner Cable's speed test.

I've got Verizon, Speedtest, and Speakeasy bookmarked, but Verizon insists that I use theirs (and it almost invariably shows a slower connection than the latter two).

I've always been suspicious about using any of the big speed testers. Any competent network admin at your local provider would modify the throttling rules to prioritize traffic to the speediest servers, so than any customer that ran the speedtest would appear to get great service.

Such tampering is tricky to detect and confirm

Well, I'll be...! And I was going to mention that the test I use is the one provided by my cable provider. Gee, and I always get such good numbers. smirk

Any chance you have a 'small print' issue? I once complained to my provider about not getting "what I should be getting" and they quickly pointed to the contract which says they guarantee to deliver "up to".

IMO it ought to be considered false advertising to quote "maximum guaranteed" rather than "minimum guaranteed", in any advertisement for any product or service.

That's what I thought right away. The ATT site had great results and Speakeasy dead slow. But I then googled speed test, and tried Time Warner, and 5 others (Cnet, Speedof me, Xfiniti, etc) and they were all fast, as the ATT one.

So is Speakeasy the only valid one, and real one, should I keep refering to that when TV shows connect poorly, or is Speakeasy screwed up?

If you download a file from Safari, Download Manager should show the download speed. Downloading something from App Store should do the same.

Why don't you try Bandwidth Place ?

You could also just watch your Activity Monitor (Network).

Good question….and I don't know the answer. However, if it was me, I'd tend to go with the crowd who all have similar results….particularly since most of them don't have a dog in the fight and therefore no reason to skew.

the crowd includes ATT, VErizon, Time Warner, the crowd gets all the good speeds. There were 3 others in the crowd who are not phone companies...

FWIW I have always relied on OOKLA. It will select a test sever for you or it allows you to choose from a variety of test servers all over the country. It is not unusual to see wide speed differences between speed test servers in the same town.

Thanks Joe is this the link? it's kind of confusing where to go:
http://www.ookla.com/demo

Anyway, there I did test, and it seemed know I was with ATT U-verse and then ran test with great numbers, at the ATT tester always does 22 mpbs, band then I tried ol' Speakeasy and it was 12 Mpbs.

Do you know Speakeasy? Somehow, (I don't know why now), it became my default tester a long time, and it seems it the only one, that shows very different results, 2, 3, 6, 10 and 22. all over the place, while all others show only 22, 23 mpbs.

This is exactly what Bandwidth Place does (see above).

This may become moot in New York State (I'm not optimistic, considering that the collusion between private and public entities is not always dedicated to the public good). We'll see. At SUNY New Paltz, Lt. Gov. Hochul announces statewide high-speed Internet plan

Just notice that Ookla has a link that goes to Speedtest.net, and lower right says powered by Time Warner.

And then just notice that Speakeasy, in lower right has an Ookla icon!

Grelber, you link does not work, no website up at your link.

Sorry. I just fixed the link (which previously had .com truncated to .co). It now connects.

Conclusion: (Please let me know I"m wrong):

I've used Speakeasy for years to test internet speed. I complained to ATT, and they directed me to their speed test and it was fine. I then tested many others, and they all tested fine and fast too. It seems only the Speakeasy site will show slower results 4pbs, 5mbs etc (which occur when my computer / internet is slow!)

Which leads me to believe that only the Speakeasy site is accurate. Anyone ever dealt with this? Thanks!

I haven't had a chance to try any of this, but here it is: Evaluating Your Broadband Speed

I just ran a speed test at Internet Health Test, an independent testing site. It confirmed the results that I got at Time Warner's site and validated the speed that I am paying for. For comparison purposes only, I got around 36 Mbps download speed and 6 Mbps upload. (TWC promises lesser speeds, so I'm getting more than they claim.)

Did you run your test hard-wired or over a wireless network?

The latter supposedly reports slower speeds than the former.

I have a hard-wired network (Arris modem leased from Time Warner, connected via ethernet).
