I've now installed El Cap, and as an anecdote (given the age of my MBP mid-2010), I find 10.11 running easily and efficiently.
My aging MBP has only 8GB of RAM, but this is not posing any issues; so, although I don't know precisely, Activity Monitor verifies El Cap is not running with a lot of overhead. I generally keep 3 apps (Safari, Mail, iTunes) continually running, and AM shows just a bit over half of the RAM being used.
Additionally, my MBP's processor is a vintage, 2.66 GHz Dual Core i7.
So anyone with an aging desktop / notebook that's not that much older than mine, I think it fair to say the upgrade to El Capitan is worth considering (even though some of its features will only run on current models).

That's good to know. For those who may need this, see How to Fix OS X El Capitan's Annoyances. I may find that handy if MS Office 2008 and Photoshop CS5 don't work. But, I won't be upgrading to EC until version 10.11.2, in all probability (I like unforeseen bugs to be worked out).

As a PSA, here's a link, to Mac Observer, about doing a clean install: Clean Install El Capitan

I downloaded and installed El Capitán this morning. The download was calculated to take 45 minutes but I think it was less than that. The installation took about 30 minutes. Everything went smoothly. I had to reset a few preferences (notably a custom keyboard shortcut for Dashboard) and reinstall Java 6 for Photoshop CS5, plus I had to update two utilities (Cocktail and OnyX), but everything seems to be as I had it in Yosemite.
I'm keeping fingers crossed that nothing major will rear its ugly head. So far, so good.
