OS 10.6.8 iPhoto 8.1.2 I have 205 castles in an album and each time I click slide show, a window appears saying "iphoto unexpectedly quit" and that apple would be notified. This has happened several times over the last 3 days. I have also tried other albums with the same result. Any ideas?

I've got no idea if this is your problem, but the last version of iPhoto for OS X 10.6.8 is iPhoto '11 v 9.2.3 , and it...

I have downloaded 9.2.3 but when I treid to install it, it said I need 9.1.0 first.
I have tried for over an hour to download 9.1.0 but it seems impossible. Lots of sites say it's there to download but actually doing it is something else. Can you help me here artie?

Mark, I saw plenty of downloads for 9.1...I was thinking that is different from 9.1.0, am I right? If it is the same, I'll download it immediately. Please let me know. jaybass

I would think that 9.1 and 9.1.0 are the same. I can't guarantee anything. It is the apple site and after i downloaded the update it is called iPhoto9.1Update.dmg. It is a 177 mb. I have no need to install, so I can't take it any further. Below is the description from the Apple page

This update adds several new print product options to iPhoto '11. It also improves overall stability and addresses a number of other minor issues.
â–ª Provides the ability to create and order calendars in iPhoto.
â–ª Additional letterpress holiday greeting card themes are now available.
â–ª Fixes an issue that prevented videos downloaded from MobileMe or Flickr from importing correctly into iPhoto events.
â–ª The update is recommended for all users of iPhoto '11.

iPhoto 9.1

iPhoto 9.1.1

Edit: I assume that 9.1 = 9.1.0 (9.1.1 looks like an update to 9.1, not an entire installation.)

iPhoto 9.1 and 9.1.1 are updates to iPhoto 9, which is part of iLife '11; jaybass is running iPhoto 8.1.2, which is part of iLife ’09.

Thanks for that.

Until you posted I hadn't realized that I got an iLife '11 upgrade bundled with OS X 10.6.4 when I bought my refurbished 2010 MBP...thought I was in the same position as jaybass.

I have downloaded iphoto 9.2.3 which requires 9.1.0 or later to install this update.9.1 update says it cannot be installed on this disc. iPhoto 9.0 or later is required to install this update. I cannot find a way of downloading 9.0 so I guess that means I can never install iLife'11. Although you have it with OS 10.6.4. Am I missing something? jaybass

First, I'll clarify where I stand: I had a 2009 MacBook that came with iLife '09. In 2013 I upgraded to a refurbished 2010 MacBook Pro with OS X 10.6.4 that, without my realizing it, came with iLife '11, so I thought my iPhoto 9.x was simply an update of my iPhoto 8.x when it was, in fact, a whole new beast. (My MBP's original release date preceded iLife '11's release by around 6 months, but Apple gave me the then current version in 2013.)

As I said earlier, I didn't realize what had happened until dk posted.

Getting back to you, though, you can certainly install iPhoto 9, but (Edit: I believe) you'll have to buy the entire iPhoto '11 suite of apps.

It seems like it ought to be somewhere in the App Store, but I'm not familiar enough with the store's workings to find it if it is.

It is, however, available on eBay…perhaps elsewhere.

Update: I just found this Apple.com page that says "Product No Longer Available", so I guess you're stuck with eBay et al.

Thanks artie, At least now I know where I stand. I had thought about ebay but I read somewhere that some have purchased the DVD only to find that they couldn't install it. I don't think they take returns! jaybass

As far as I know the only time you will find "previous" versions of anything on the App Store is in the rare cases where a developer is still offering both versions of a product and there is no "free" upgrade available. Once an app is either upgraded or updated the old version is removed from the app store.

In point of fact, neither iPhoto or its replacement Photos appear in the App Store as Photos has become a "standard" application integral to OS X.

My son has iphoto 7.1.5 with SL and slideshow works the way it should. After going to numerous forums, I found users of 8.1.2 cannot get slideshow to function. I'm sure apple knew of this problem when it was introduced so why didn't they issue a solution? If they did, I can't find it. jaybass

I can't address the "couldn't install" issue without much more information, but I just searched eBay for iLife '11 and Apple iLife '11, new, returns accepted, and without looking very far found one seller that has sold 350 of them with an almost perfect satisfaction record...Family 5 Pack/US $29 (Buy It Now). (System requirements for Apple's iLife '11)

Your only other options appear to be upgrading your OS or trashing iPhoto (Move all of its support files to a folder on your desktop until you know that you haven't lost anything.) and reinstalling.

Did you search eBay US (or Canada)?

For starters, check out the first item here.

Edit: I also see plenty of stuff on eBay Canada at lower prices than you mentioned...new, returns accepted.

Edit 2: Is the import duty on something like this a factor?

I clicked on ebay but wound up on amazon? Anyway I just looked at the site you mentioned and the price was $4.95US and when I bid higher, each time I was told I was outbid. This continued until my last bid was $10.00US and I was still outbid. Shipping is $13+ and considering our dollar is now .74cents+, the final price with duty would be too high. Thanks for your input anyway. jaybass

…not quite in line with the gist of the thread, but worth mentioning to you or anyone else shipping into Canada: Be very careful picking your shipper.

Unless they have changed their tactics, UPS can be very expensive with their charge for calculating duty. (I say "unless" as I have not used them for years, after being stung.)

There is paperwork involved with calculating the duty and most places have minimal or no charges for simple shipments. Most will also let you know that you can avoid any charges on larger or more complex shipments by doing the paperwork yourself at their offices.

That was not the case with UPS, the last time I used them. They had a 'minimum' fee which, as I recall was about $50 and exceeded the value of the item I was receiving.

Ouch!

You've never clarified if this is a new issue or it's been with you since day one.

If iPhoto has worked OK all along and this is new, you can still try reinstalling as I described above.

Edit: And finally, if this is critical and your Mac can run OS X Yosemite you can upgrade free and get the new Photos app with the 10.10.3 update.

artie, When I bought this imac (2009) it had 7.1.5 and slideshow worked. I don't remember when but one time after opening iphoto, a window appeared saying that an update was available and of course I figured it must be an improvement so I updated. I tried to revert back to 7.1.5 but couldn't. It isn't critical and besides, how would Yosemite work/or not with some of my other software...more money I suspect. One thing I have noticed on various forums is that no one to my knowledge, has slideshow working with 8.1.2 Is there actually a solution?
BTW, I did trash iphoto and download it again but to no avail. I can live with it I suppose. Thanks for all your suggestions...appreciated. jaybass

Last thought... Don't you have a disc (that would have come with your iMac when you bought it) that's got iPhoto 7.1.5 on it?

Seems like you should be able to revert using it.

Good point about the "free" Yosemite upgrade not necessarily being all that free.

Edit: Caveat... iPhoto 8 may have updated your photo library and made it incompatible with iPhoto 7 (similar to what happens with iTunes); I don't know if there's a workaround for that other than re-importing all of your photos.
