I set up alerts and when I click the alerts icon I see this info. /Users/jondan/Desktop/alerts.png Can someone tell what if anything I should do?
The above is a screen shot of that info. If it cannot be read, how do I post it? jaybass

set target of Finder window 1 to folder "Utilities" of folder "Applications" of startup disk
set position of Finder window 1 to {176, 224}
close Finder window 1
set position of Finder window 1 to {83, 276}
set position of Finder window 1 to {110, 394}
close Finder window 1
close Finder window 1
set target of Finder window 1 to folder "Utilities" of folder "Applications" of startup disk

1. Upload your screenshot to FreeImageHosting.net.

2. FIH will return a long URL that will look like this: <a href="http://www.freeimagehosting.net/commercial-photography/texas/houston/"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/U4bjF9h.png" alt="Houston commercial photography"></a>

3. From that URL, extract and post only the blue portion. (Don't forget to leave out the quotes.)

4. Post your link by utilizing the "Create a link to a webpage" icon...second from the left, above.

I did upload that screen shot and it said image format not supported or image corrupt. Should I uninstall alerts? I don't understand what that readout means. jaybass

I dunno. confused

You still haven't told us anything about your pop-up, so it's tough to say what you should do next.

(Assuming that you took a command-shift-3 screenshot, I don't understand why it can't be uploaded.)

Edit: Wait a minute!

Are you saying that your second post is the text of your pop-up?

If so... That's an AppleScript that doesn't look (to me) at all like it has anything to do with anything "alerts-y".

Next time you see it, take a look to the upper left corner of your screen and tell us what application is running.

Edit 2: I just tried to run your AppleScript and it wouldn't run. confused

This the bottom part of that text. tell application "Finder"
activate
set target of Finder window 1 to folder "Utilities" of folder "Applications" of startup disk
--> error number -1728 from Finder window 1
Result:
error "Finder got an error: Can’t set Finder window 1 to folder \"Utilities\" of folder \"Applications\" of startup disk." number -10006 from Finder window 1

I got the same error when I tried to run the script, but I can't imagine why it's popping up at all.

What "alerts" did you set up, and how?

Download what?

If you're running 10.6.8 you should have /Applications/Utilities/AppleScript Editor.app v 2.3 on your Mac already.

AppleScript Editor always opens blank when you launch it by double-clicking on its icon, because it assumes that you launched it to write a new script.

The only times I'm aware of that it opens "populated" are when you double-click on an existing script to edit it or, as I'm guessing is what's happening to you, you attempt to run a script that is incorrectly written.

I've got no idea what "alerts" you set up, but, apparently, clicking on its icon invokes that AppleScript, and the editor is popping up because it won't run for some reason.

I now realize what happened. When my computer was hacked, alternaut mentioned CIRCL (ALOD) which I downloaded and would have alerted me to any additions to certain files. This download resulted in an alert icon on my desktop which when opened displayed that text we spoke of. Since any potential damage may have already been incurred, I uninstalled ALOD and my computer is back to where it was. I do want to download little snitch but I will have to understand it much more than I do. I think there may be video tutorials available. I will keep you posted. Thanks artie for your replies. jaybass

artie, I have just installed and purchased little snitch 3.3.4 I have it at the factory default settings. Can you recommend any changes in the configuration? Thanks again. BTW, is there a PDF I can download? jaybass

Yes. Links to Little Snitch documentation are found on the LS Support page. In addition to a downloadable manual (in PDF or eBook format), there is a FAQ page as well as an extensive Help option accessible from within LS (‘Help’ menu).

Apart from that, I wonder why you decided to uninstall ALOD. The fact that you already seem to have suffered installation of some type of ad- or malware doesn’t preclude that of another. ALOD and LS are mutually compatible and don’t duplicate functionality. I’m not sure what the issue is with the Scripting alert you received (at first glance it appears to contain mutually exclusive items), but I doubt that that would block ALOD’s installation or general function (also see below*). Do you know which ALOD version you downloaded? The one dated January 23 2015 currently linked to on CIRCL's ALOD page is listed elsewhere for Mountain Lion and up. Perhaps the alert you received is related to this.

*) I noticed that ALOD may return errors encountered when running its scripts. If that happens during installation and AppleScript itself is OK, those alerts (other than what you listed) tend to list missing or incorrectly named items from the list ALOD checks. That doesn’t mean the file checks ALOD runs don’t work, just that the reporting of the results is affected. For instance, ALOD may report a file change in a certain folder, but omit the file’s name. I suspect that there may be Mac OS X version differences in file name or locations that cause this.

alternaut, I googled CIRCL to find the correct version for my OS. I cannot remember the version. I uninstalled ALOD because I just wanted to rid my computer of the problem I had. I downloaded L/S 3.3.4 and it's not as complicated as I first thought. I have downloaded the PDF which I will have printed. Ran D/W and TTP6 and backed up with superduper. Thank you for your reply.

I'm happy to hear that you're off to a good start with Little Snitch, because, never having upgraded past v 2.5.4, I doubt that I could help you very much with your v 3.x.

:rant: When v 3 first came out, I decided that its new features didn't include anything necessary to my situation, and even LS tech support could do no better than tell me that "There are improvements.", which left me feeling that it was a boondoggle with value to a few users that was being foisted on all...I wonder why? (I'll eventually have to upgrade, because my v 2.5.4 doesn't run in Yosemite. mad ) :/rant:

Your biggest problem with LS will be that, especially at first, you're going to be inundated with requests to "call home" that you're going to have to evaluate..."Allow", "Deny"..."Once", "Until Quit", "Forever", and I'm sure that while many will be no-brainers, many will confound you.

Particularly because of your possibly vulnerable position, I advise your either denying, Googling, or posting here and asking for guidance before you allow any request that you don't readily understand; if you deny a request and there are obvious unwanted consequences you can always undo the rule in your LS Configuration pane. (And bear in mind that just because an element of OS X, rather than a 3rd party app, is making a request it's not necessarily a valid one; you need to understand the nature of any request before you "Allow" it.)

Please don't hesitate to ask if you need any clarification.
