I am not that familiar with the Nano, so excuse me if I overlook the obvious here. By its very nature (small) isn't the Nano meant to hold an ever changing collection of music? What is there to back up? No apps, documents, etc.?
OK, so if you want the contents to remain static (it is your absolute favorite, mantra-type collection), you could make a Playlist in iTunes of the Nano's content. Your usual backup methods of your Mac will back up this Playlist should you need to restore it to your Nano.
On a Mac since 1984. Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

I think I'd go with Ira on this one - there's no way to create anything on the nano, everything it has comes from the computer, so there's really nothing you need to back up.

Actually, I think this may be a weird one. I forgot to mention it is a 2nd generation Nano. I don't think you can. I just like the thing because it has a tiny screen so even after all these years, the battery life is pretty good. When I attach my iPod Touch, the gen just before it had a camera, iTunes does have an option to back it up. (I like to call my iPod touch my iPad Nano.)

the only thing that's getting backed up may be the play count for the tracks?
