Turn my HP6mp into a copy machine?

I have a geek-crush on my relic Laserjet, however I do need a copier. So I can get a laser all-in-one which is pretty cheap but I always have the same issue, the supplies are expensive and they all eat up toner. My lovely HP needs a new cartridge about every two years. Real copiers are expensive even used. I have a fax machine (ink jet, yuck) and a good scanner. The question is weird but can I get something that has a stack-type paper feeder scanner and hook it up so it prints to my HP?

I have a ScanSnap iX500 sitting on my desktop and connected via USB to my computer. The scanSnap is many times faster than the flatbed scanner, scans the front and back of documents in a single pass, has great resolution, and has a document feeder that works very well. The software that comes with the ScanSnap outputs in multiple formats including PDF and will OCR the PDF as well. One of the output options is "Scan To Print" which, for all intents and purposes functions as a copier. There are only two things it does not do…
  1. Scan a book — only a true flatbed scanner can do that
  2. Send or receive a fax
But then my printer is a multi-function device and provides those services which are very seldom needed. One other function provided by the ScanSnap software is direct input into Evernote which I find I am becoming more and more dependent on for personal and business record keeping.

You could use automator to make a folder action that prints anything that drops into snapscan's destination folder. that would effectively be an automated photocopier.

That is a good idea but unnecessary. With the ScanSnap Manager software, Scan to Printer is a standard option.

Thanks, sounds good. I was going in a very complicated direction, put a switched Ethernet hub between the print server and the router and run a cable between the fax and the switched hub (it's weird, my fax has an Ethernet port.) Your solution sounds less adventurous but that's ok.

Does Snap Scan work with Snowy?

Good question I do know that it worked with Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, and Yosemite but I cannot answer for snowy. I looked for that information on the Fujitsu web site but I could not find anything. Fujitsu's technical support number is Toll-free 1-800-626-4686 (7am-7pm CST Mon-Fri, 10am-3pm CST Saturday).

I've known people using snapscan for years. At least back to 10.5

Can I use a SnapScan in place of my fax machine? It would be good to just get rid of the fax machine and use the space there for a SnapScan? Also, is there a Mac version and a windows version or are they the same?

According to joemikeb's post above, SnapScan does not fax. So it can't replace the fax machine as a facsimile sender/receiver. But if you were using your fax machine just to make copies, it sounds as if you could replace it with SnapScan.

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

no it does not fax, but we set up an older iMac across the room at one office, running an older version of mac os x that worked with the apple modem, and had it working as a standalone fax (incoming and outgoing) You just print, and it opens the print dialog with the ability to select from the contact list. So to send a fax, they drop a document into the snap, and it drops a jpeg into a folder on their desktop. they double click that and print it, to the fax. (they also have a receive folder on the iMac, which is shared, and that's how they receive faxes)

No, I actually use the fax machine to fax. It can make a one sided copy, but what it prints is barely legible and it is inkjet. The problem is, I have a small studio apartment and recently jettisoned massive amounts of stuff and that part is great, I can actually see where the wall meets the floor in many places. Now counter and shelf space is high value.

I was doing something similar to V1 when they discontinued AppleTalk. You used an older Mac as a print server. One of the first things to go was older macs during the dump. I guess I am back to a compact laserjet somewhere, makes more sense than another sorta bridge solution. Or the copier at the UPS store.
