Notes frozen - unable to remove overlying source code

Saving a recipe I cut and pasted  from within Safari, when I attempted to paste it into Notes triggered an overlying sheet of  source code. [I can see no way to add a .jpg showing the problem.]

The note starts:
'Are you sure you want to delete the note BBCadverts.write{"wallpaper",false};
          underneath is /*![CDATA[*/

I cannot delete anything, cannot shut down Notes and can only force shutdown the computer. On restart I can open Notes but any attempt to use it triggers the overlying source code.

The note titled ‘BBC advert’  cannot be deleted and triggers Safari opening  with two blank tabs, one named SafeFrame Container, one HTMLS local storage test

A Spotlight search for SafeFrame Container brings up only a blank box alongside Webpages.

If I force quit the computer then restart Notes will open but any attempt to delete  the overlying Note triggers  the same problem.

I have Reset Safari, removed all website data, deleted the BBCadvert note from iCloud, run Disk Utility.

Help to will be appreciated.

Sorry, Kate, but that's the only thing I can help you with...

1. Upload your screenshot to FreeImageHosting.net.

2. FIH will return a long URL that will look something like this: <a href="http://www.freeimagehosting.net/commercial-photography/texas/houston/"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/U4bjF9h.png" alt="Houston commercial photography"></a>

3. From that URL, extract only the equivalent of the blue portion. (Don't forget to omit the quotes.)

4. Post your link by utilizing the "Create a link to a webpage" icon...second from the left above the post box.

Hope this enables you to get a speedy response.

The way Notes works, the first line is the name of the note. Normally the length of the first line would be limited, but when you paste it may create a first line that is very long. It sounds like you managed to copy a lot more than you intended to, and that has created a note with a long, possibly multiline name, full of code. Try copying that text in the note and pasting it into TextExit. Select Make Plain Text from the Format menu in TextEdit to remove any markup that may be lurking. Then edit and remove the trash from above, below, and inside the recipe text, then copy that. Switch back to Notes, Select All to select the entire corrupted note, and paste over it. You may need to add a line of text at the top of the note if the entire recipe somehow has no line breaks in it.

Thanks Artie , I opted to try the other suggestion first and somehow got it to work, but will keep yours for future reference.

The weird thing was, because I had never used the BBC site before, I first cut and pasted the recipe into TextEdit -checked it for problems, then cut and pasted it into Notes which then triggered this problem

Try copying that text in the note and pasting it into TextExit.
Select Make Plain Text from the Format menu in TextEdit to remove any markup that may be lurking.
Done that

Then edit and remove the trash from above, below, and inside the recipe text, then copy that. Switch back to Notes, Select All to select the entire corrupted note, and paste over it. You may need to add a line of text at the top of the note if the entire recipe somehow has no line breaks in it.
I followed your direction but was not able to paste or add a line of text.

I had previously reset Safari to disallow open apps to reopen on start up, This allowed Notes to be opened, though it locked up if I tried to delete the Note self marked as ‘BBCadvert’, and had been unable to get past the corrupted note to do anything else.’

More out of desperation than anything else I shut down then restarted the computer - on the third attempt the corrupted note had disappeared, Safari no longer opened with two blank tabs, one named SafeFrame Container, one HTMLS local storage test, and I was able to delete the note marked ‘BBCadvert…’

I dislike Notes but have, until now, persevered with it but am pinning my hopes in this being a one time glitch.

Thank you for your help and patience
Kate

Good news, Kate.

Hope my instructions remain unnecessary...for troubleshooting, anyhow. smile

As an alternative to Notes, check out the free Evernote. It is quite versatile while remaining easy to use. It also synchronizes with other devices or computers that you may have.

You do need to create a free Evernote account, since that is how your info is kept current on the different devices.

Thank you for your suggestion.

I had an account with Evernote and had worked up enough enthusiasm to use it for most things, that was until an Apple Store update wiped everything and I was not able to restore it without help. After waiting for weeks without any response from Evernote I gave up and stated to use Notes..!
Having started my Mac life with OS8 I know the value of back ups and Stickies.

Thanks V1

Anything that improves Notes will be a bonus; too often I find myself going back to an old MacBook and Snow Leopard.

Since your Evernote data are in an Evernote account hosted by Evernote, independent of your computer, I would think that installing a clean version of Evernote on your computer and logging in with your previous Evernote ID would restore everything you had with Evernote, regardless of what happened in-between.

You would think, but there are lots of other factors in that story. tongue Whether the Notebooks and their enclosed notes and documents are Synchronized on the Evernote servers or they are Local on your computer is optional. You can have both. If you have a lot of notes you can quickly fill any free disk allocation for Synchronized Notebooks and have to get a Premium Account (a.k.a. spend $$).

I was caught by the same update Kate referred to and the problem was a bad release from Evernote and had nothing to do with Apple or the App Store other than their being a distributor. That update broke several things in Evernote but the data was never actually lost. The problem was Evernote would take anywhere from five to thirty minutes to open a note and display it. shocked Like Kate, I initially assumed the database was lost but I found out on Evernote's own discussion boards what was going on. Their Tech Support at the time was apparently ducking for cover from all the incoming flack they were getting.

It took Evernote two or three rapid fire updates before the data would once again load normally and at least one more to restore full functionality. During that interregnum Evernote was so busy "fixing" problems they did not release the updates to the App Store, but distributed them online from their own servers. To be truthful I am not sure when the App Store and Evernote releases got back in synch but the current App Store version is Evernote 6.0.13 and came out in late May.

If Kate still has the original Evernote data files, or if her Notebooks were synchronized the files are still there and should be recoverable by the simple expedient of downloading the latest version of Evernote from the App Store and logging on to her Evernote account. It should still be there and accessible. Once Evernote got things sorted it has been very stable and I find I am using it for more and more things. In fact I am finding more and more iOS apps that talk to Evernote and expand its usefulness.
