When I used Snow Leopard, a shutdown or restart closed all open apps automatically. Then, no apps were open upon booting. In Yosemite, any apps that were open seem to open automatically upon booting. I have looked in System Preferences and Finder Preferences for a way to change this but have not found it. Is there any way to alter this setting?

Yes. When you select Shutdown from the Apple menu (or get there in one of several other ways possible), the popup window asking you 'Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now' has a checkbox marked 'Reopen windows when logging back in’. If you uncheck that box, your open apps won't peskily reappear after (re)starts.

Is that a "Don't ask me again" pref or a one shot deal?

That was it! I always restart via the keyboard shortcut, which obviates that dialog box. The setting sticks: I just checked it via the Apple menu with both the Restart and Shut Down commands. In both cases, the box was unchecked.

I’m not sure I understand your question correctly, but as Jon already found, the setting sticks until changed. The checkbox to change it is always present on that popup window that appears when selecting Restart or Shutdown from the Apple menu.

Maybe I was a bit obscure, but my question was, indeed, whether the pref is sticky or has to be re-[un]selected at each restart/shut-down.

I'm wondering, though, about Jon's report that "restart[ing} via the keyboard shortcut, [which] obviates that dialog box".

I get a dialog box when I use control-Eject to do whatever, and it seems logical that the option that Jon's box is missing ought to be present.

It sounds like, not necessarily a bug, but, an oversight that ought to be corrected.

I never use Control-eject. Instead, I use Command-Option-Control-Eject to shut down, Command-Option-Eject to sleep, and Command-Control-Eject to restart. I believe that the inclusion of Option nixes the dialog box.

I just tried command-option-control-Eject, and my MBP shut down immediately...no dialog box. (My Apple menu shows command-option-Eject for sleep, but no options for restart and shut down, although c-o-c-E obviously works.)

I think that what you've run into is an oversight on Apple's part that ought to be reported. Now that there's an option attached to restarting and shutting down, it ought to be presented in all instances, regardless of how they're invoked.

(You've got a typo in "Command-Option-Eject to sleep, and Command-Option-Eject to restart".)

Edit: I don't know why, but I just got the exact same response from command-control-Eject as I got from command-option-control-Eject.

Hi, artie!

I'm glad to know where to find the opening prefs dialogue if I need it, but for me, the whole point of using the option key with sleep, restart, & shutdown commands is to bypass any additional dialogues -- thus making it a fast one-click operation.

Hi, Judith.

Point well-taken, but... When the "option" option was created, there were no options attached to it.

Now that the "Reopen windows when logging back in" option is attached, I think it ought to be presented, even if only once (with a "Don't ask me again" option)*, for the benefit of those who are either unaware of it or may want to use it sometimes but not others.

I see the option as a very possibly on again/off again thing depending on circumstances, and users shouldn't have to remember to use an alternate shut down (et.al.) method should their momentary preference change from their general one.

Users like you who know precisely where they're going would deactivate the warning, while others, who are less set in their ways, would leave it turned on.

* On second thought, the ask/don't ask dialog would probably be better presented as a system pref. (Edit: ...to enable toggling without going into Terminal.)
