It looks like Youtube deprecated Safari 5.0.6 (the latest Safari version running on PPC iMacs under MacOS X 10.5.8, the latest OS version for PPC Macs) sometime yesterday, Dec. 8. Youtube page display was reduced to text-only, listing the deprecation. Changing User Agent to Safari 5.1 didn't help (so Safari 5 appears to be 'out' altogether), but a change to Opera 11.11 did. Kind of: although Youtube approved of that browser choice, page display still is text only. A few other observations: Firefox 3.6.28 (!) still works well, but Youtube displays a message that they'll stop supporting it soon. Opera 10.63 displays OK without such warning.

Has anybody else noticed this deprecation, or has other comments on the topic? In particular I'm wondering if Safari 5.0.6's text display on Youtube may not be caused by the deprecation, because Youtube's display on Safari 5.1.10 (on an MBP running Snow Leopard) is still OK (not text-only), even though that version is indeed listed as deprecated too.

Another victim of outdated software and continually progressing technology. According to html5test.com Safari 5 has a score of 246 while 5.1 comes in at 305 which might help explain your results. Changing the user agent would not effect the HTML5 score as that is based on the actual ability of the browser to correctly handle a suite of tests.

Out of a possible 555 points Safari 8 scores 429 which puts it behind Chrome 39 (512), Firefox 34 (475), and Opera 24 (504), but ahead of iCab 5.5.0 (414), and well ahead of Internet Explorer TP (380).

NOTE: Your browser is automatically tested and scored every time you access the HTML5Test site.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

Thanks for your comments, Joe. It's not so much that I'm surprised by the concept of deprecation, it's just that the sudden killing off of Safari 5.0.x without any notice strikes me as somewhat strange, certainly compared to the other oldtimers I mentioned. Their html5test.com scores are about the same as that of Safari 5: Firefox 3.6 = 173 (but 4 = 240, and I tested the immediately preceding 3.6.28), and Opera 10.60 = 239. Seems to me that Youtube wasn't taking this particular metric as gospel, or as the only criterion for deprecation. That is, if it actually did, of which I'm not so sure any more.

That's because the situation still seems to be in flux: Safari 5.1.10 started working again with Youtube sometime after I posted the error above. No more mention of deprecation on a special splash screen, go figure. Safari 5.0.6 still displays Youtube pages text-only, but instead of mentioning the deprecation it now states 'This video is unavailable'. That seems to apply to any video.

I'm just sayin': weird! confused
