> I made a DVD master from the SL Install Disk but can't seem to make a duplicate because when I use put a load a blank DL-DVD, Disk Utility doesn't 'see' it.

I've used SimplyBurns to successfully, although not necessarily 100% successfully, duplicate a bunch of OS X DL/DVD install discs.

Before trying to duplicate a disc, I copy it to my desktop to make sure it doesn't choke on any I/O errors (and I've actually uncovered a bad disc by doing so).

Edit: Got my fingers crossed for you.

Well, things got hectic quick so I just erased a small external drive I have and did a system installation on that, it gave me at least a startup drive because there were many problems getting the internal drive to zero out with disk utility. Maybe part of the problem was something 'stuck' to that drive. Kept freezing the computer and had to keep starting over. Will make an official one when I get a chance. Will try what you suggested.

btw, the error string had them stumped at the Apple store, too. My theory is the problem originated with the airport software. Falling off the network was the first symptom before each freeze. One suggestion they made, because the network kept finally giving the message that the airport card was not installed was that since it is located inside the hinge, it may have become damaged through ordinary use. When I reinstalled the system, I left off the airport update software for now and so far, so good. One step at a time.

Uhhh... Well, they've certainly got all bases covered. (Surely, they've got a way to check an airport card...haven't they?)

Well, in their defense, all the hardware tests came out ok. I don't know if that includes testing the airport card. If it is in the hinge, it could very well be an intermittent problem depending on what the connection looks like.

With an intermittent problem like this they can test the Airport card or any other component and unless it is in failing mode at the time they perform the test, it will test good. Thirty seconds or one closing and opening of the lid later it may test bad. It is relatively easy to test a problem that can be reliably reproduced, but this kind of a problem may not be infallibly identified until it deteriorates to a total failure.

Well, definitely Firefox 30.0 is a problem. Page just would not load. I went back to 28.0. I also did not install the airport update when 're-paving.' So far, so good.

If you check out "What's New" (ie, release notes) in Firefox versions 29-30, you'll note a number of unresolved problems relating to Mac OS X at the bottom of the list. That's one of the reasons I haven't bothered to update my Firefox 28.

Oh. GTK. Ok, so something went wrong and I'm back where I was. Can I completely replace the HD with my Time Machine backup from a few hours ago?

More specifically, I think what set it off was that on one of my backup drives there was a mysterious 'system' folder, and when I deleted it, I think that's when it happened. What was that folder and again, can I get back to where I was completely?

The internal HD seems to be linked to that backup drive and even tho I erased free space on it, it will not eject. It is not my TM drive, I use Silverkeeper with it.

Wiped the drive again. Now it won't let me install SL. Is there a way to set this back to factory defaults?

I'm at the Apple Store now. It says Snow Leopard cannot be installed on this disk. Please select a Time Machine or oner backup you wish to restore from. I don't understand. The external drive it wouldn't eject is off and disconnected and I zero'ed out the internal. There does not seem to be any reason I cannot reformat the internal drive as I did before, start over, because it seemed when I rebuilt it before perhaps sometime when I copied old files from the SilverKeeper backup, that disk and the internal one on the mac became linked. I don't know what that system folder was on the SilverKeeper drive, it was not a full system folder, nor was it an alias, the only visible items were internet files of some type...

I think I earned my title today! I was using the SL disk from my 15" Macbook Pro. Double Duh. Duh. Anyway, I am here, they are testing the HD extensively and are installing 10.9 so they can run an extended airport card test. (Have to install the system so they can disconnect the ethernet startup cable.)

They offered to put a full version of Snowy on before I left, but I don't install some of the updates so went home, paved the driveway, and let it snow again.

Ok, the problems are back and it HAS to be the drive. Will this work in my Mid 2010 MBP Version 7,1 running Snowy?

Western Digital 750 GB WD Black SATA III 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache Notebook Hard Drive WD7500BPKX?

I presently have a WD7500BPKT in it. Is the newer one going to be of any advantage or should I just replace what I have?

The only advantage I can think of the new drive have is the additional 250GB more capacity.

That's not it, I think it's the SATA III??? They are both 750GB.

Is the SATA III compatible with what I have?

According to a quick Google search, your WD7500BPKT is also SATA III. You should be good to go!

The BKPT is a 3.0Gb/s drive, and the BPKX is a 6.0Gb/s drive.

The 6 is backwards compatible, but it will only run at 3.0Gb/s.
