I have a peculiar problem in Excel after I create a ball, using Option/8. If I attempt to duplicate that ball to an adjacent cell by dragging, weird things happen.

Drag downward - no ball, instead the information from a cell in a totally unrelated spreadsheet.

Drag right - no ball, instead the information from the same cell in the totally unrelated spreadsheet.

Drag left - no ball, instead the information from a different cell in that same unrelated spreadsheet.

However, if I create a ball in two adjacent cells and then drag after highlighting the two cells, Excel will continue to copy the ball as expected.

Creation of a new spreadsheet doesn't change anything. It's always the same information from the same unrelated spreadsheet.

Curious, very curious. Poltergeist?

I can't help you other than by suggesting that you post your version of Excel.

Of course, I should have thought of that.

Excel for Mac 2011
V 14.3.9 (131030)

And, an additional bit of background, the information from the unrelated spreadsheet is always from the same cell of the same records of that sheet.

You would probably get more answers on the Microsoft Office for Mac forums.

Yes, you may be right. I'll check them out and if I learn anything I'll post here.
