Mystery beep from iPhone 4S

Occasionally, I hear a faint double beep that repeats itself several times and then stops. It usually occurs when I've put the iPhone down and am not using it, but the screen is on and bright. Sometimes, I have a text message open for a long time without any action on my part. It's not heard very often, but I can't figure out what it is or what triggers it. I realize that this is pretty scanty info, but I don't know how else to describe it. Does anyone know what it is?

JoBoy,

One thing to look at on the iPhone:

Settings > Messages > Repeat Alerts. What interval is selected?

Is there any change if you turn the iPhone off, wait a bit, and then turn it on again?

I'm using iOS 7.1.1. On my version, I cannot specifically follow your instructions. I can go from Settings to Messages, but there is no Repeat Alerts under Messages. Is there a typo problem in your previous message?

JoBoy, my information was incomplete.

Corrected to: Settings > Notification Center > Messages.

OK. Thanks. I changed Repeat Alerts from 3 to 1. Frankly, I haven't heard the beeps since early yesterday, but I'll see if this change eliminates them. If so, at least I'll know the source. Then, I can decide whether the beeps are helpful or just a bother. The problem is not knowing. Without knowing, I'm left to wonder if some problem is impending or whatever. Thanks for your assist. It is greatly appreciated. Best regards.

I haven't heard the beep since day before yesterday, but I'm not getting many inbound text messages and I pick up the ones that I receive before any reminder beep has a chance to do its stuff. If this is merely a message center reminder beep, I'll have to leave the inbound messages alone for a while. I'll get a friend to send me some. I'm changing it back from one beep to three to see if it brings the beeps back. If so, at least I'll know what it is. I've also changed to the "Bell" alert sound that is more robust than "Illuminate." This may help to identify the beep if it sounds and if it is changed.

Again, thanks for putting me onto this. I'll let you know when I experience it again.
